Eleanor's POV
A loud noise awakes me from my dreaming, but I have no motivation to even make it stop. It's coming from my alarm clock next to my bed and I finally move my body in order to make the ringing stop. I see the large red numbers telling me that it's only seven in the morning and I could scream. I just roll my eyes and place my head back onto my pillow, hoping when I opened them back up I could be somewhere else.
"Eleanor Mackenzie, if you're not out of bed in two minutes I will come pull you out myself!" I heard a shrill voice yell from downstairs and I mumbled to myself, wishing that I could still be in school. Of course it was the first day of summer and my mother had nothing better to do than set my alarm for a time where it was barely even light out. She would always say, 'the early bird gets the worm, and you Eleanor Mackenzie, deserve the worm'. Excuse me, what? I deserve sleep, that's what I deserve.
I finally get up out of bed, knowing that if I didn't get up, she really would come pull me out. I hopped in the shower quickly, allowing the warm water to wash away my annoyance. I stepped out and put a towel around my body and combed through my hair, allowing my slightly wavy hair to dry on its own.
I walk quickly to my room and pull out a pair of leggings and a v-neck from closet and put them on. I apply a thin layer of make up, and then slip on my white converse before making my way downstairs. I see my mother reading the newspaper and drinking a cup of coffee as she sits at the kitchen table. I head towards the pantry and go onto my tippy-toes in order to grab the Captain Crunch from the top shelf. I make myself a bowl of cereal with some milk and sit down across from my mother.
"I should be home around five this evening. You are planning on going to the library, correct?" My mother asks me, not once looking up from the column she was reading.
"Actually, I was thinking about going around and looking for a job today." I announce as quickly and shove another spoonful into my mouth.
"Honey, you don't need to get a job. That's why I went back to school, so I could provide for us and you wouldn't have to worry about it. I have a good job now, you need to worry about your future and keep studying this summer. We both know that Brown University doesn't allow their students to be slackers." I was trying to say something but my mouth was full and before I knew it she was getting up. She placed a kiss on my forehead and walked out the front door, not giving me time to even swallow my food.
I wasn't worried about money. I just wanted to find something to do besides stick around here all summer and get orders to bury my nose into a book. I'm 18 years old, what mother doesn't want their child to get a job? She never once asks me what I want, it's all about what she has planned for me. I finished my bowl and placed it in the dishwasher before grabbing my car keys and heading out the door, locking it behind me.
I obeyed her orders, as I always did and got into my car and started driving to the library. Once I got there, I locked my car and made the walk in. I saw the woman at the front desk, who always worked in the mornings.
"Your books are in the corner, sweetheart." She smiled sweetly, and I smiled back.
"How are you doing this morning, Beth?" I asked her as I walked closer to the desk.
"No complaining here. I checked out a economics book onto your card just in case your mother checks again." I told her she was the best and made my way towards my corner. She had become my ally in all of this. Secretly helping me out, knowing my mother's ways. I picked up the 50 Shades of Grey that she had set on my chair and held it up for her to see and smiled. She winked in my direction and went back to her work. My mother would never allow me to waste my time on something like this so Beth helped me find a way that she would never know. She checked out other books on my card (yes sometimes my mom checked) while I read romantic novels in the corner.
After getting half way through the book and receiving weird stares from multiple middle aged women who have probably read the book themselves, I decided to head out. I was getting too bored. It was summer and I didn't feel like spending it locked up. I said goodbye to Beth and made my way to my car. I was going to head home but then I saw a little record store with a 'Help Wanted' sign. I made an impulse decision and pulled my car over and parked. I hopped out, confidently and heard the bell ring above me as I walked in.
There was maybe two people in the store shopping, but then again it was probably only 10 o'clock. I begin looking around the shop, picking up records and seeing what I knew and what I didn't.
"Can I help you with something?" A raspy voice interrupted me and I looked away from 'The Killers' record I was looking at and quickly put it down. I saw his lip ring and eyebrow piercing first and then his blonde hair spiked up next.
"Uh, yeah, I uh." He looked at me and his eyes widen waiting for me to make some sense with my words. "I saw the Help Wanted sign outside and I was wondering if I could have an application."
"Do you know anything about music at all?" He asked, seeming to be patronizing me. He rolled up sleeves only to reveal tattoo sleeves underneath. I then noticed the tattoos creeping out from the neckline of his black t-shirt.
"Uh, yeah." I announced semi-confidently still taking in his whole appearance.
"Pick your favorite album; if it's a good one, you get the job." The boy who looked to be my age sat down on the wooden stool near the counter and I began to look at the aisles and aisles of records.
"Do you know how long it's going to take me to pick one?" I rolled my eyes as I continued picking up records.
"Good thing I work all day." He stated simply and I looked up to find him reorganzing albums.
After about thirty minutes of browsing and a couple costumers checking out later, I finally picked an album. I handed him the album and he nodded.
"What's your name?"
"Eleanor." I said timidly and looked up at him.
"I'm Luke. Be here bright and early tomorrow morning, Eleanor. Noon sharp." I laughed and then he gave me a glare so I pressed my lips together in a tight line. I walked out of the little shop hearing the bell ring above the door once more and Luke humming to Blink 182.
