The thing about Greg Heffley is that he is pretty self absorbed and doesn't often pay attention to important events that happen right under his nose. That means he failed to write about how Rodricks band in fact wasn't a band at all, but undercover teen geniuses hired by NASA to complete an important mission. Later that day, Rodrick would have to test a time machine that they built and go back exactly one year.

It was 4:36 a.m when Rodrick finally accepted we wouldn't be able to sleep no matter how hard he tried. None of his "band members" could either. His room was lit only by the brightness of his phone as he mindlessly scrolled through apps on a never ending cycle. not even his magazines could calm him down. in defeat, he shut off his phone and stared up at his ceiling. the room was pitch black. Rodrick chuckled to himself. he thought about how his family thought he was just a low life kid who would never evolve to anything in life. but little did they know, he would be going on the most important mission in history. it was a struggle for him to keep this secret for that exact reason. he constantly had to swallow his pride as the whole Heffley family ridiculed him day after day. he cringed. why was he so upset? pride was the least of his worries.

An hour went by and the sun just started to peek through his black curtains. Rodrick picked up his phone. 5:48. a normal scientist would probably be up and working by now but since it would make his family suspicious, his friends would be at his house by 3:00. Rodrick stretched out his arms and headed to the bathroom. He locked the door and quietly showered. his family believed he only showered twice a month, but he actually showered everyday. He had to get special shampoo issued by NASA that made him smell bad, but that was just part of the job. once his hair dried he reached for his hair oil and massaged into his head. gross, but clean, perfect. to make his day seem more normal, he snuck into Gregs room and tied all of his shoe laces together. just as he was about to shut his closet, Rodrick felt a cold splash on the back of his neck.

"Stop right there!" Rodrick looked back to find his brother sitting up in his bed with a water gun.

"Jesus Greg, I just washed this shirt!"

"Washed it?" Greg lowered the gun. "You? Washing something? Who are you and what did you do with my brother?" he said sarcastically.

"Yeah, I washed it in my sweat. Wanna smell it?" Rodrick hesitated before he responded. There was about five seconds of awkward silence before he left the room. That was a close one.

3:00. It was time. Rodrick slipped into his garage. All of the band members were already there. No one said anything to each other. they stared at the tarp that was supposed to cover Rodricks drum set until he ripped it off. instead of drums, it was his time machine. Everyones face was white and flushed, especially Rodrick. Because this had never been done before, only Rodrick would go back in time. They couldn't risk loosing the whole group if something went wrong. One of the scientist sensed the tension and walked over to the machine. he turned it on.

"Ready?" he said.

"Ready as I'll ever be."
