"Sullivan. Khloe Sullivan" I said as I shook hands with the prison in-charge.
"Vargas" he replied, a stupid smirk on his face.
As much as I hated this place at first sight, I had to stay for almost a month in order to get my next clue.
"I will give you a tour of the prison, but first I'll show you your cell" he said, his voice thick with the Panamanian accent.
"Follow me"
As I followed him to my cell I could feel eyes boring into my back and laughter ringing in my ears. Even though I didn't speak much Spanish, I could understand some of the vulgar comments being made by the other prisoners as I passed by them, making my stomach sink lower and my mind fill with dread."You can do this Khloe, just a month. Just need to get to - "here you go."
Vargas interrupted my thoughts as he pointed to a dingy cell, the last one facing a wall.
" I will get you your uniform, make yourself at home" he chuckled, walking away.
" Gee thanks" I muttered under my breath, my eyes exploring the cell. Not that there was much to explore, the first thing I noticed is that that were two beds. The dreadful feeling returning, I just hoped that Vargas would pair me with a weak inmate, in case the need to put up a fight arose.
I sat on the bed thinking about my next move when Vargas returned, throwing me my uniform. " Come."
I followed him to a room."This restroom is off-limits to other inmates, but in your case I'm making an exception" He said."Thank you" I replied and rushed into the restroom before the conversation went any further and locked the door behind me.
I heaved a sigh of relief, happy that at least I had the restroom all to myself.
As I began undressing, I looked at my chest in the mirror, which I had wrapped tightly with gauze not wanting to attract unnecessary attention. My outfit was a white T-shirt, a light blue pant and a matching blue shirt to go over the T-shirt. "Decent enough outfit" I thought to myself as I finished dressing, and took a final look at myself in the mirror. The uniform fit perfectly, going along with my jet black/dark brown hair, which cascaded in waves till my upper back. I noticed a small storage shelf in the corner and threw my old clothes in.I walked out and saw a guard waiting to escort me outside to the campus, where the inmates had to spend their time from morning till evening.
The sun almost blinded my eyes as I stepped outside, the door slamming shut behind me.
Even though my eyes were taking time to readjust to the sudden flare of brightness, I could feel the stares coming in from all directions._
As I looked around I saw Vargas beating up a prisoner. He took notice of me and yelled " welcome to the best prison in Panamá" as he beat the prisoner again. The other inmates started snickering as I began regretting my decision.Vargas started walking towards me, the guards dragging away the prisoner he just beat up. "Shall we start the tour?" He smirked. "Yeah, I can't wait" I rolled my eyes, as I started following him around the prison campus.
We finished by lunchtime and I was really hungry, my stomach growling in hunger. "Enjoy you time here chica" he said as he walked away, leaving me near the cafeteria.
As I walked towards the cafeteria I noticed that they were serving some light brown slop, making me nauseated but I didn't have any choice since I was hungry. I took some of the slop hoping that there would be some side dish but to my dismay it was only apples as I saw the last one being taken by an inmate as he turned and smirked at me, biting into the apple.
"Great" I muttered as I walked towards an empty table in the corner of cafeteria, hoping to blend in.
I sat and took one look at the slop, and decided I wasn't hungry. Burying my face in my hands, I tried to calm myself down and not burst into tears when I heard a voice behind me.
"You sure look like you could use an apple right now" he said chuckling.__________________________
