Present
It was three days till Halloween, Haley and her two younger sisters, Roxanne and Miranda, were walking to school when they saw a path.
"Where does the path lead to, Haley?" Asked Miranda.
"I don't know", she replied, "Want to see?"
"I don't think we should." Said Roxanne.
"Why not, are you scared?" Asked Haley.
To tell you the truth, I was, but I didn't want Haley to know that. I admired Haley. Ever since Mom died, Haley was kind of a replacement. She had long, silky, copper hair with cool, gray eyes. I would miss her when she goes to college, three years from now. She and I got along, unlike my other sister, Miranda.
Miranda has past shoulder stringy blonde hair with sky blue eyes. She thinks just because she is three years older than me she knows everything. She tries to be like Haley but fails miserably. For one thing, Haley is very meticulous. Everything has a specific place. She cleans the house every day. While Miranda is the messiest person in the world. Once when my dad had enough of seeing her room, we cleaned it out, we found a three-year-old sausage pizza. If that's not bad enough, she still ate it. Even though Miranda is nine years old, she still acts like a toddler. Once when my dad took us to Toys-R-Us, she wanted another bicycle. My dad said no because she already had two at home. After three hours of kicking and screaming, he became submissive and bought it.
I think that I am the oddball of the family, for I have curly shoulder length black hair with emerald green eyes. Haley resembles my father, while Miranda resembles my mother. My dad tells me it is okay to be different, to embrace my difference he calls me Ferdie.
I don't know why he calls me Ferdie but it doesn't bother me. Even though my father doesn't show it, he misses mom. No one notices it but me. Real late at night, I would see him dancing and clinging on to one of mom's favorite dresses. Now I see father when I look at Haley.
"No, I'm not scared." I said.
"Good, let's go." She said.
We walk on the beaten path, I am very lethargic. We see the house, it looks haunted.
"Maybe we should leave." Said Miranda.
That shocked me; usually Miranda isn't afraid of anything.
"We'll leave in a minute; I want to look inside the house." Said Haley.
Miranda and I stared at each other.
"Roxanne and I are leaving." Shouted Miranda as she grabbed my hand and ran. Unfortunately, Haley is a track star, so it took no time until she caught up with us.
"You two aren't going anywhere; don't you know that dad would kill me if I ever left you two by yourselves?" Replied Haley.
So we walked towards the porch and opened the door. When the door brushed to the left, I was amazed at what I saw. Even though the outside of the house was horrific, the inside was like a palace. The floor glistened as we walked on it. Above us was a gorgeous chandelier. Strings of gold beads crisscrossed each other. Looking at it made me dizzy. As I kept gazing at the big booming sun, I thought whoever lived here; I wish I was related to them.
"Haley, I'm hungry, can we go now?" Whined Miranda.
"No.", said Haley, "We can just eat in the kitchen."
"I don't think we should do that." I said worriedly.
"Why not?" Asked Haley.
"Because that's rude." I said very agitated.
"Oh whoever lives here won't mind, we'll just grab a thing or two, then go." Said Haley.
The kitchen was more extravagant than the foyer. The walls were burnt oak, the table was longer than the Titanic and a football field put together.
"Let's go look upstairs." Said Haley.
"But I'm hungry." Miranda whined again.
"Quit being a baby." Said Haley.
When we got upstairs, we quickly looked in all the rooms. The rooms were so beautiful that I had forgotten that I was supposed to be scared.
"Haley, can we jump on the bed?" Asked Miranda.
"Sure, if you need anything I'll be in the bathroom putting on some make-up."
"Then can we leave please?" I asked.
"Yes, Roxie, then we can leave." Said Haley.
I like it when Haley called me Roxie; it was like a secret code name we shared. Like with her and Miranda, she called her Randi. No matter the situation, it always comforted me when she called me Roxie; it lets me know that she hasn't forgotten about me.
"Ahhhhhhh." I heard from the bathroom.
"Haley!" We screamed.
We threw open the bathroom door and stood in amazement. There on the mirror words written in a silver substance said 'Get Out.'
