"The storm is expected to hit New Jersey by Sunday night, and into Monday morning," says Lee Goldberg, a meteorologist. Honestly, I dont believe that a storm will hit us. I ignore the warning and change the channel, hoping that everyone will stop talking about it, but knowing that no one will.
Next day, (Saturday) I wake up to find my mother in the living room with the television on watching the latest storm track.
"Same stuff as yesterday Mom. Its not even going to be that bad. You watch!"
"I dont know, you never know", said my mother. She can be so stubburn sometimes!
I should have marked my words. The next night, which was Sunday night, we were continuing to watch weather updates while heavy rain, and wind pounded the windows. The next moment, in a flash, all of the power came off. It was literally dead silent in the house. What was even worse was, my mom was so dumb to not get flaslights. We had to light a candle so we wouldnt bump into anything. This had its own risk : FIRE!
The wind outside sounded like a fast train coming through a tunnel. The wind just made you want to run outside and see what was going on. In the distance I heard a loud BOOM. That really scared me. I hoped that whoever was in there was alright, because that didnt sound good at all.
Through out the night, I kept on hearing all these big booms, and many disturbing thought came into my mind! Can they be trapped in there? Could they be possibly dead?!
I stayed awake, or should I say KEPT awake for the rest of the night. I decided to go down to the beach where all the pretty shore houses were. After I got my parents' permission, I quickly put on some layers, and went outside.
What I saw was a complete DISASTER! Yes, the houses that were standing about two days ago were off their feet, and swept to shore. Other houses were piles of debris. I saw people walking their dogs, who were trying to get what it looked like food under all that rubble. And it wasnt only the houses. There were trees lying all over the place. I even saw the tree that cut open my power line! Hopefully PSE&G would get here quick!
Fortunately they did. Within four days, the lights came back on. We were even fortunate to have our house, because all around us, there was trash. I have learned a lesson from this - APPRECIATE YOUR POWER!
