It had been months since Eira and Mackenzie found a home with the Lagmans. The sisters attended therapy twice a week, once for the individual appointments and once for an appointment together and they were slowly phasing out the group therapy sessions to once a month instead. It helped Mackenzie become more understanding of what Eira had been through and her anxieties about their past, of becoming a mother, and Eira understood Mackenzie's fears of being left behind and forgotten. They could easily sleep in their own rooms now, although Eira still slept on the firmer mattress of the couch-bed but that was more because of her back problems with the pregnancy. She studied online for her GED, taking catch-up and refresher classes to help her build up enough credits to graduate, and Mackenzie had a tutor come over every other weekday for a couple of hours so she could learn everything she needed to know from middle school onwards so she could graduate too. Mackenzie had already decided that she wanted to become a teacher, but she volunteered with Wendy at least once a week.
Eira wanted to volunteer too, but because she was pregnant, Wendy refused to let her but Miguel often went out with them to treat other homeless people who needed help. He came over every day, bringing with him piles of real estate listings and it took a little over two months of looking through those and house viewings until they found the right house. It had only just been built and they were the first to view the empty four bedroomed house, Miguel only hearing about it because a patient he treated in the hospital, it was the patient'sson who was the architect on the house.
It wasn't too big for the two of them and the baby, it had a playroom off from the kitchen for when their child was a little older and it was the perfect space for Eira to start caring for children - she'd already agreed with Lauren and Donna that she'd do childcare for their adopted daughter once she was settled in with them, she was three years old and already the light of the family. She loved her new Moms, getting all the attention and love she craved after coming from neglectful parents as a baby and then being in a foster home with ten other children. Lauren and Donna would pay Eira every week for caring for their daughter, so it would give Eira an income and her own money, and that in itself was a start and enough hope for Eira that her life was going to change for the better.
Her unborn son continued to thrive, proving every doctor wrong. He remained completely healthy, moving and kicking and growing perfectly - he truly was a miracle, and both Miguel and Eira knew they were the luckiest parents to have such a blessing as him. Miguel would tell their son about Cody, about his older brother that had passed away. It was hard when Darlene told them that they were expecting a boy, memories of Cody flashing into his mind but Eira was his strength - she was there to comfort him when he cried, the same way he'd been there for her. They'd even had sex, not because Eira felt manipulated or pressured, but because she wanted to.
"And we're officially packed up." Miguel announced, shutting the trunk of his car and he gave Eira a sad smile when he saw her looking close to tears. "It's okay to cry." He assured her, rubbing her arm and Eira just nodded her head, walking over to Mackenzie who was already crying and the two sisters hugged each other tightly, the best they could without Eira's large bump getting in the way - it would be the first time they would be living apart in their entire lives and although therapy had been helping them to prepare for the day Eira would move out, it was still hard.
"I know I'm gonna see you tomorrow for dinner... but it's still going to be hard without you." Mackenzie choked out and Eira gave her a gentle squeeze, letting a few tears fall.
"You can always call me, and I'll call you." Eira promised and Mackenzie nodded slowly, pulling away from her.
"Look after my nephew." Mackenzie said and Eira smiled, a hand on her bump.
"Always." She promised, giving her another hug and she kissed her cheek, Mackenzie kissing hers too before they pulled away from each other and she gave a quick hug to Darlene and Lloyd after Miguel was done thanking them, Lauren, Donna and even three-year-old Mya for helping them pack up his car and the moving truck.
"You'll be fine, sweetheart... you just focus on the little guy." Darlene said softly and Eira nodded her head, blowing one final kiss to Mackenzie, who blew one back and she let Lloyd comfort her as she watched Eira get into the car with Miguel.
"You ready to go?" Miguel asked, holding her hand, and Eira took a deep breath, nodding her head.
"I'm ready." She confirmed, a small smile on her face as Miguel kissed her hand, starting to drive them towards their new home - their new chapter, their new life.
