This is the letter Rose had sent to James upon her death.

My Beloved James,

I have done something you will not like.  I hope you remember me, we loved once.  The fall of 1989.  After we went our separate ways, I learned that a part of you stayed with me.  I found out after I’d returned home.  My mother called me a whore and tried to get me to get rid of our child.

I could not do that.  She threw me out in one of her fits.  After that I made up my mind that this child was mine and mine alone.  I understand this was unfair to you.  No one knew you were her father, least of all, her.  I left school and got a job moving halfway across the country.  I was not going to be someone else’s burden.

I thought about telling you countless times, but I could never find the words.  Then, of course, you got married.  Having a child with a woman you’d had a semester-long tryst with seemed a poor way to start your marriage.  I wasn’t going to interfere.  I did wonder if she knew about me though.  I wasn’t knowingly going to be a home wrecker.

I had Juliet and named her after the star crossed lovers and royalty.  Juliet, Anastasia Victoria Benn.  A regal name even if she never knew of her royal blood.  I have not told her.  She does not know who you are.  She does not know you’re an important official.  I will not tell her.  I will not tell her incase you doubt me and you doubt her.  I’ve included a picture.  She’s very much your daughter.  But if you choose to deny her, I won’t give her false home of an absent father who will never come.  In the end, it’s your choice.

You may be asking why now?  After all these years, why would I disrupt you now?  Because if you’re reading this, then this sickness that's ravaging my body has taken my life and I don’t want to leave Juliet alone in this world, not if there’s something I can do.

She’s rough around the edges, a little unorthodox, and puts up a brave face.  But she’s a sweet girl and tender hearted.  She’s as loyal as the day is long and fiercely protective of those she cares for.  She’s just as much my daughter as she is yours.  I’m afraid she has my stubborn streak and your rebellious nature.

We were irresponsible, young, reckless, and in love.  She is the physical proof that we were fools.  I would happily lay my life down for her happiness.  She is my greatest treasure and the greatest gift I can give the world.  If you choose to contact her, don’t break her and don’t walk out on her.

Loving you still,

Rose
