First Christmas

I woke up early grinning.  I stared at Xavier making funny faces.  He could always tell when someone was watching him, even in his sleep.

When he opened his eyes I was sticking out my tongue making one of the most obnoxious faces I could.

“Good morning to you too, beautiful wife of mine,” Xavier chuckled as he yawned.  His arms found my waist and he pulled me closer to give me a kiss.

“Guess what!” I whispered as I pulled back

“What?”

‘It’s Christmas!  So get up!”  Xavier laughed as I sat up.  He flopped back down and just stared at me.  “I said get up!” I stood and started jumping on the bed.  Martial artist that he is he knocked my legs out from under me and I landed on top of him.  Within a moment he had rolled me under him.

“What has you so excited?”

“It’s Christmas, duh!  Santa obviously came.”

“Santa?”

“Yes, now get up, I want to see what he brought me.”

Xavier yawned again and stretched.  “Very well.”

We got up and Xavier started a kettle on the stove and the coffee maker.  Meanwhile I was bouncing around like a little kid on the couch waiting for him.  I grabbed a cookie off the mantle.  I’d insisted we leave cookies for Santa, which is code for Juliet wants cookies for breakfast.

Xavier came back a few minutes with tea for him and coffee and hot chocolate for me.  I have a wonderful husband.  “I put sweet rolls in the over.”

“You’re making cinnamon rolls?” I beamed.

“Yes, darling.  Now tell me, what did Santa bring you?”

I started sorting out presents.  I tore into mine like the five year old I am mentally.  Xavier on the other hand is a careful one.  He’ll find the taped corner and open it all neatly.  Somehow he never rips the paper.  The only year he did was when I used duct tape just so he would have to.  He’d found it amusing that I went to so much trouble just to get him to rip the wrapping paper.

Xavier had gotten me a beautiful necklace, some lingerie, which I’m pretty sure was more for him than me, and seasonal passes to the theater, and a few other odds and ends.  I got Xavier a first edition of Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities, some new things for training for him, and some World War II memorabilia.

“Looks like Santa was good this year,” Xavier smiled at me as he put icing on the cinnamon rolls.

“Hey!  You missed one!” I called.  I handed him a small, neatly wrapped package.

“I did?”

Xavier looked at it and read the tag.

To Xavier

Love J

“Hmm, I wonder who J could be.” Xavier mused as he opened the parcel.  Xavier pulled out a pacifier and a piece of paper with a date on it.  His eyes met mine.  “Juliet?”

I grinned up at him.  I pulled out a pair of tiny shoes from behind my back.

“Are you?”

I nodded.  “Yes.”

Xavier’s face was shocked for a moment then his arms went around my waist and he lifted me up at spun me.  “That’s wonderful!” When he set me down he gave me a scorching kiss.  “How long have you known?  How far along are you?”

I shrugged.  “I don’t know how far I am yet, that date is my first doctors appointment.  I scheduled it around your schedule.  And I’ve known for about three weeks.”

“You kept a secret for three weeks?  I’m impressed.” Xavier kissed me again.  “This is the best Christmas present anyone could ever ask for.” Xavier knelt in front of me and lifted my shirt.  He kissed my still flat stomach and started talking to our baby.

“Hello, this is your daddy.  I can’t wait to meet you.  You have the most beautiful mommy in the world.  And I hope I don’t traumatize you, but I’m going to do the same thing that made you right now.”

Xavier stood and kissed me hard and passionately.  Without missing a beat, he had me in his arms, not breaking the kiss for a moment.  “You are the most wonderful person I’ve ever met.” Xavier whispered as he nipped at my ear.

“I think the feeling is mutual.” I grinned back at him.
