Jagged Beating Heart

I could see it in your eyes.

Plain as day.

The smile on your face was big but the pain was bigger.

I could tell.

I could hear you screaming as you laughed.

I could feel your urge to disappear with every waking moment but I couldn't reach you.

You stood before me, hand outstretched, begging.

But no matter what I did I couldn't reach you.

I stood there, in silence, as you clawed away at your heart.

I can't believe I miss that look.

The look of pain.

Anything is better than what I see now.

I see nothing.

Your eyes are lifeless and you don't even bother to smile.

You turned away and your hand fell, no longer wishing to be saved.

You sunk deeper and deeper and pulling you out was impossible.

I can't see the scars.

Physical and emotional.

But I know they're there.

In every jagged beat of your heart as you try to struggle for breath.

As you try to hide away from life and your problems.

I could see it in your eyes.

Plain as day.

Except now the day was stormy and raining and as I took a step towards you, you jumped into the ocean and gave up.

I'll never forget when I found out.

I knew something was wrong.

I could feel it.

You managed to fight the waves but the damage was done.

You were here but you weren't.
