It's Friday and I had no intentions of going out today except to my parents house. I had needed this day off to focus on my school work for my finals. Sitting around in my pajamas my doorbell ring and in came my niece not evening waiting for me to open the door she rushed over hugging me tightly. I embraced her back before my brother baby mama Kelly came in shaking her head with my niece baby shark book bag in her hand and car keys. Joining me on the couch.
"Ava what I tell you learn to knock before you rush into your auntie house. You hear me?"
"Yes ma am" Ava said before going into her playroom that I made for her.
I only had one niece so I spoiled her like she was my own. Kelly knew I didn't mind her coming by with Ava because me and her grew close over the years more like best friends. My brother hates it really because when he wanted to bring his flings to my mother house I would invite her for the hell of it. We sat and talk until her phone interrupted us. Kelly phone ring multiple times until it stop and than rung again this time she still didn't answered even the FaceTime call. Not bothering her I went back to studying when my brother called my phone.
"What's up Ni listen I need you to do me a favor till mama and pops cookout later to watch Ava for me and tell Kelly to answer the damn phone when you see her."
My eyes made contact with hers and she shook her head signaling with her hand like she was not in my house. Looking back to him I continued on and agreed.
"Yeah no problem."
Hanging up the call she told me she has a date tonight and after would be to the cookout out as well. I thought to myself I guess she didn't want to talk about it so I wasn't gone press the issue. Kelly got up and went into my bedroom to get an outfit to wear dragging me along. Knowing once she leave I can study because Ava will occupy herself till shes hungry. She showed me a dress that showed her backside. I ask about this guy she was going on a date with.
"He's a good man know that money is not important to me like you. And honestly I hope Troy can let me be because we've been bumping head lately."
Hugging her I left out the room to give her space as tears welled in her eyes. Making me out to be the bad person I regretted having this conversation with her. I took my hair out of a bun while playing in it crisscrossing my legs on the couch in my pajamas. Kelly walked back in calling Ava out the room she came into the living room telling her mother goodbye. When Ava left the room I pretend she was gone to prevent more of a conversation picking up my glasses to get back to studying. Waiting on a response Kelly grabbed her clothes and left out assuring me that we'll talk it over later.
Ava and I got dressed later on for the cookout waiting on my brother arrival at the family house. My parents were the oldest known couple in the area and they had an event everyone came out. I was helping set up the tables when my mothers called me inside. She told me that she wanted to have an important conversation. She tried to convince me that today would be special and that sometimes as adults we need to forgive and move on. I shook off her comment and went back inside to prep for the party. After while people began to show up. People from school and my family all came together for me to be announced as a graduate. Later everyone was in awe as I opened my gifts and finally cut the cake. I gave the biggest piece to Ava when I turned around I became aware of a voice I haven't heard in two years walked behind me.
"I would like a piece of cake but only if you share it with me."
I turned around to see my ex fiancé Rilo who I would've had a family with but him not working and me paying the bills became a habit. He began to live off me and cheated with a women in my bed. Slowly turning around I mean mugged him wiping cake on his jogging suit. He laughed acknowledging he deserved that and made a big announcement in front of everyone standing up on the nearest chair taking off his jacket.
"Listen up everyone I lived off this girl and cheated. I never knew my mistakes would cost me something more important than life. Now I want to take the time to apologize to see if she'll have me back?"
Everyone clapped and cheered even my own family. It hurt because they know how broken he left me. My family support him and I was through. I cried while pulling the ring off my hand that I never could take off until now. I placed it into his hand and I excused myself from the party. My heart wasnt in a place to accept what it did to me. I could never be one with him again now I was a single woman focused on her dreams.
