Death. A simple word but all too familiar. A word that's haunted Asteria the last 20 years of her life because she had to come to terms with the fact that she embodied death. No matter how much she ached to love, to nurture, to be happy. Death was inevitable. Most would say love came through the eyes but not in Asteria's case. The first time it happened was when she was born, the infant opened her eyes for the first time killing the midwife instantly. Her mother, struck with fear blindfolded her eyes and hid her away from the world for if anyone knew, they'd claim Asteria an abomination and her daughter's life would be lost.
Since birth, it never happened again. Not until her 18th birthday. Her mother and her were cooking supper when an abrupt knock came to the door.
" Go inside the bedroom, I'll answer it. " her mother tells her
Asteria obeys, quickly running to the bedroom.
It was only seconds before she heard a quick scream.
" Mother!" She screams running back into the living room
" Take it off, Asteria."
" But-"
" Take it off" she screams
A man pushes her to the ground just as she gets the blindfold off.
" You're a pretty one, I might have to take advantage of that." He says" Let me see that pretty face, open your eyes." He says
She looks up into his eyes and instantly blood pours from his mouth, his skin turning pale and his body still.
She pushes him off of her and runs to her mother
" He was after me for a while Asteria. Your father owed him, I just never thought it'd be so soon." Her mother says looking at the knife lodged into her heart
" Mama" Asteria cries
" Dont be scared my love, you'll be okay. I promise. Now do me one last favor." Her mother softly says
Asteria nods, her eyes shut closed
" Look at me" her mother says
" No, I can't" she cries
" I am already dying my dear, let me see my daughter's eyes before I go" She says taking Asteria's hands in hers
Asteria slowly opens her eyes, tears flooding from them.
Her mother smiles and closes her eyes at the sight of her daughter before her and her heart finally stops.
For the first time ever, Asteria was truly alone.
