Summer 2011
Andrew was staring up at the ceiling fan, lounging on Ryan's bed. It was summertime and the temperature outside was boiling, like any other summer day in Florida. Ryan and Scott laid on the floor, their hands holding onto a game station console. The sound of the annoying fairy from Legend of Zelda would pop up from time to time.
"Fuck!" Scott yelled when the game stopped, someone must have lost the game. Andrew didn't care. He was still tired after getting the text from Ryan late at night, asking him to come over. He woke up to his cell phone flashing that bright light when a text message is received. Andrew grabbed the phone and rubbed his eyes, it was Ryan's text.
Ryan: Are you asleep right now?
Andrew: Now I'm not. What's up?
Andrew closed his eyes and held onto the phone when it beeped that same bright light again.
Ryan: Come to my house tomorrow, the guys will be there too.
Andrew: I don't know where you live. I don't even drive a car.
Andrew placed the phone down and then Ryan's text came through with his house address. Andrew shut the phone and then fell back asleep. He woke up later in the morning around nine. He sat up in bed, rubbed his eyes, and stretched when he saw his phone on the bed instead of on the nightstand. He reached for it and looked through the last text he got that night, Ryan's address was still on his phone. He got up from the bed and went to the laptop his mom got him for Christmas, clicked on the browser once the laptop turned on, and got directions to Ryan's house. It was just off State Road 301 but in a tiny neighborhood. He shut off the computer and put on some clean boxers and a shirt. Andrew saw his face in the mirror and noticed the drool on his chin and the crazy bed hair, he'd take care of it later in the morning with a nice shower.
Andrew stepped outside and noticed his mom in the kitchen. She was dressed in a simple pajama outfit. She was flipping some pancakes and holding onto a cup of coffee. It was the coffee mug that Andrew made her in arts and crafts, back in elementary school. She only used that mug when she was upset about something or if anything bad happened.
"Mom? Why aren't you at work?" Andrew gargled out of his dry throat. His mother turned around and her eyes were slightly red from crying.
"Oh, I just had a bad night last night with Tiffany's dad. I called in sick today," his mom roused from her whimper. Andrew walked over and hugged his mom, she placed the coffee down and turned around to hug her son.
"Thank you for the hug. I hope I didn't disturb your slumber," his mom said. Andrew shook his head and looked up at her before he reached into the cupboard and grabbed a coffee mug and poured himself a cup of coffee. He offered her the coffee pot and she shook her head. Anna Rainey poured on another pancake in the pan and watched the bubbles pop and burst.
"Can I ask you for something mom?" Andrew asked in the deafening silence. He was opening and closing a fridge when Anna flipped the pancake over and turned to look at her son.
"Shoot," Anna replied.
"I got invited over to Ryan's house. I was wondering if you could drive me?" Anna looked up at Andrew a little puzzled.
"How long have you known this Ryan? Do I know him?" Andrew gave his mother a look and then leaned against the counter.
"Mom. It's Ryan Spencer. You know, Rita Spencer's kid. You went to Crest Hill High School with her all those years ago?"
"That Ryan Spencer? I didn't know they were still in the area, last I heard she was in South Carolina."
"Well, Ryan said his parents split and she moved into those homes off State Road 301 that are behind that neighborhood off Big Bend Road."
