"I don't deserve to be loved." And "I want to take care of you."
////
Kazuchika Okada looked over the still water, an untouched plate on the table in front of him. He listened to the sounds of the night, barely feeling the chill of the air as he sat at a little riverside café. The rest of the patrons were long since gone, and he could feel the eyes of the staff on him from inside, could practically hear their censure as he sat here well past closing time.
With a heavy sigh he rose abandoning his food and throwing money on the table with a generous tip. He might as well move on and let these people get home to their families. He could wallow in self-pity just fine on a bench. Hands in his pockets he shuffled along the pier watching the ground and counting the cracks until he came to an empty bench along the railing.
More flopping then sitting Kazu once again focused his gaze on the water, twinkling lights from passing boats reflecting on the surface. He was at a crossroads in his life. Had been for several months now since he had lost the title to Kenny Omega. Gone through a crisis complete with a meltdown. In the past month he had come to realize he had relied too heavily on that title. He had let it consume him. To become him. No longer had he been the lovable, goofy Kazuchika that he was. Instead he had become the Rainmaker. Cocky, arrogant, mean and entitled. That wasn't who he wanted to be. He didn't want to be the guy fucking a different woman every night. The guy discarding them like napkins and treating them worse. It made him sick to think how he had behaved towards some of those women.
"Kazu?"
His head shot up as a familiar voice called his name, staring in disbelief as she came closer. He felt like his heart was in his throat as he stared at Yoku. At the same time shame coursed through him as he remembered how callously he had treated her. Yoku had been there for him from the start, had done nothing but love him. Yet as soon as fame had come calling and that belt was around his waist he had started taking her for granted. Had done the unthinkable and been unfaithful. To this day he hated himself for how he had hurt her.
"Hello Yoku," He said stiffly, hunching over himself and hoping she got the signal to run far away from him and the destruction he tended to leave in his path.
Instead she sat next to him, her hand hovering halfway between them before she got the nerve to capture his hand in hers.
"What's the matter Kazu?" Yoku asked looking at the man she had loved, and would always love. Time hadn't dimmed her feelings for him. She could see the toll of the past few years on the once vibrant affable young man she had fallen in love with.
"You should go Yoku," Kazu said though he made no move to withdraw his hand. He had forgotten how perfectly the fit together in every way. "You shouldn't want to be anywhere near me after what I did to you."
Yoku sighed and shifted on the bench squeezing Kazu's hand. Yes he had hurt her deeply. He had behaved atrociously towards her and she would always remember that. Yet his past behavior didn't mean he wasn't deserving of forgiveness. Under it all he was still her Kazu.
"I want to be here Kazu." Yoku said firmly. "I see you struggling. I've seen you on TV and I know you're hurting. Despite everything that happened I still love you and I want to take care of you."
Kazu's heart stuttered at her proclamation a hope he didn't want to acknowledge flaring in his chest. After everything he did to her, she still cared about him? Before it could flare to life Kazu tried to viciously tamp it down.
"I don't deserve to be loved." He said. "I certainly don't deserve to be loved by you."
"Kazu, you deserve the world. You got a bit lost along the way, but I've always had faith you would come home to me when you were ready." Yoku said. "Do you not even realize where you are?"
Kazu looked up a small smile coming to his face as he realized he had subconsciously made his way back to where it all began with Yoku, sitting on the same bench where they had shared their first kiss. Just up the pier at the restaurant he had left not too long ago they had their first date.
Turning to Yoku he smiled the first genuine smile he had smiled in a very long time, the grin growing as he saw a matching expression on Yoku's face, her eyes lit with love for him.
"I'm not going anywhere Kazu," She promised fervently.
"Me either Yoku." He replied pulling her into his arms and kissing her with lips full of a promise of a new future.
