It's been at least two years since I last saw Maddie, but her complexion looks surprising similar to how I remember. Small build, dark hair and an overly-confident smile.
"Miss Ziegler will be joining our ballet program as of today, and will, of course, be participating in our Christmas performance of 'Swan Lake'!", my dance teacher exclaims. I can't help but draw in a sharp breath at the mention of the winter production, it's only the biggest performance of the whole school year. And, on top of that, the audience is filled with casting directors and Hollywood agents, desperate to seek out some new talent. This could be the big break I've been waiting for...
I've been rehearsing my audition piece over and over for the last week or so, filling any spare time I had with extra ballet. I can feel the stress build up inside of me as the realisation that I would once again, how to compete against Maddie, kicks in. As kids, we competed non-stop and had been rivals for years, but I guess back then it never really affected me. After all, we used to be best friends. Things are so different now...

The morning passes by in a blur of confusion and stress, and before I know it, it's time for lunch. Remembering the promise I made myself this morning, I decide to swap my normal dietary choice of a bowl of pasta and diet coke, for a salad and bottle of water. I sit myself down in my usual seat, surrounded by all the other ballet students. "You alright Chlo?"my friend Brynn asks, obviously noticing my strange choice of lunch.
"Yeah I'm fine," I shrug ,"just not...er ...hungry today I guess..." She seems to believe my bluff and returns to discussing the latest episode of 'Gossip Girl' with Kalani. Paige plonks herself down beside me, obviously not impressed. "What the hell is she doing here?" She scowls, scanning the cafeteria, obviously looking for Maddie.
"I don't know, probably trying to ruin my life again." I sigh, nibbling at the lettuce on my plate. My eyes finally find Maddie, she's sat at one of the square tables in the corner. She is sat beside non other than the infamous Nick Dobbs. Nick Dobbs.
"Who does she think she is?" I mutter beneath my breath. "Sitting with Nick Dobbs for all people". The biggest jerk and jackass in the whole school. Well I should know because he broke my heart last fall....
