Scene from: The Lightning Thief - Half-Blood Hill
[Annabeth's POV]
Day turned to night way too soon. Dark clouds gathered overhead, which surprised Annabeth because it never stormed over Camp Half-Blood unless intentionally willed. Thunder rumbled in the distance.
The wind began to build, and the campers started to notice the abnormal storm, many growing still, forgetting whatever tasks they were doing.
Abandoning her activities, Annabeth quickly acknowledged a couple of her siblings she'd been hanging out with, and jogged across the dining pavilion, towards the Big House at the end of the horse-shoe of cabins where she found Chiron and Mr. D relaxing on the porch, sheltered by the deck roof. "Chiron, what's going on?" she asked.
"Oh, it would appear that Ares must have been caught in another one of Hephaestus's snares," Mr. D drawled, answering for Chiron. "Either that, or my father just tripped and fell on his royal hindquarters at the dining table."
In response to that, more thunder boomed across the sky. "Apologies!" Mr. D called upward, not sounding like he meant it at all.
"Do you think the thief was caught?" Annabeth asked Chiron, ignoring Dionysus.
"I told you, child," Chiron said patiently. "We do not even know if the rumors about something being stolen from the gods are true or not. Should that story be accurate, we would know it if the thief was found." He glanced up at the darkening sky. "This is something much different. Being my age, I have seen it countless times before. We should be expecting a visitor very soon."
Annabeth stared at him. "A visitor? Like, a new camper? Do you think its Grover?"
"Peace, Annabeth," Chiron chided. "I think today's activities should be called off for the rest of the afternoon and evening. It looks as though it's going to be a big storm, and I prefer it when my campers aren't blasted to ashes by Zeus's element."
As if on cue, a massive clap of thunder echoed across the sky, rain beginning to hiss into the valley. Campers dropped their tasks, and fled for the cabins, cramming themselves through, (the Hermes cabin, of course, the most chaotic, being there were at least two dozen more kids than normal.)
Chiron raised a conch horn and blew anyway, signalling curfew across camp, though it seemed unnecessary. The camp was nearly empty already, demigods sheltered within their cabins. "You should go as well, child," Chiron told Annabeth. "Rest up, and have fun with your siblings. Think of it as a day off for the rest of the evening."
Annabeth opened her mouth to protest, but then closed it wisely. Though she wanted to argue, she knew she was only a twelve year old student, and Chiron was a near five thousand year old teacher.
But this couldn't be just an average storm. She'd heard the stories of Grover sensing a powerful demigod over at Yancy Academy. Chiron had reported to the job as the suspected half-blood's history teacher at the boarding school. Upon returning just yesterday, she'd overheard Chiron talking with Mr. D about the situation. "His power is indeed one of rare entities," Chiron had said. "It is one that I have not sensed in many years."
Mr. D huffed in boredom. "Chiron, my dear Centaur, years are mere minutes to my eyes. Give me an accurate time and date."
"During the 1980's," Chiron said in exasperation.
"Ah, so about eight hours ago," Mr. D said.
"He is in grave danger should Grover not get him to camp soon, though," Chiron murmured. "With power so great coursing from one being, it makes me think he may be a son of the Big Three. And if I am correct, he'll attract monsters from within the borders as far as Pennsylvania."
