"I can't believe your going to Texas. I mean, what for?" Isabel asks.
"I already told you, when the Jenkins had to cancel their trip up to New Jersey last year, my parents decided to head out there to see them," I say. The Jenkins are a family that we used to go to school with. Mom, Dad, Kerry, and Peter were visiting them for the weekend, while I would be at the national training ranch. I'd see them for a day when we first got to Texas, then I was going to the ranch.
When Coach Dave told Jordyn and I he wanted to have us go there Thursday at afternoon practice one more time before trials, we had to cancel our movie night. I told Jolene I would have to come early to do her make up since our plane left at 6:00. Our parents quickly made plans with the Jenkins to hang with them. Mom had to explain everything to them and why I would only be there a day or two.
"Well have fun, while we have to sit through school," Isabel mopes.
"Thanks, Bell. Knew you would understand!" I put on a big smile and patted her back.
"Yeah, whatever," She mumbles and goes to put her gym clothes on as I go to the front office to leave. I had to leave school extra early so I could pack. We were leaving straight from Jolene's house to the airport.
"Big things happening this weekend. Have fun," Mrs. Holsoun whispers as I sign out. I smile and wave goodbye.
"Hey, Jolene!" I say when she answers the door.
"Hey, come in, Carmen. Hi Mrs. Pace. Hi Kelly," Jolene says. Dad and Peter stayed in the car while I quickly helped my best friend.
Mrs. Munzo came over to my mom and they went to the kitchen to chat. Kelly came with Jolene and I to her room.
"You want subtle, correct?" I ask.
"Absolutely," Jolene nods.
"Cool," I say as she hands me the make up to use. I start by brushing a tiny bit of the pink blush on her cheeks and then go to put the tan eye shadow on. Even though I avoid makeup and only use it for interviews and big competitions, applying it has become second nature for me.
"Dang, Carm. I never realized how good you are at this. I honestly thought Jordyn did all your make up for you," Kelly commented.
I roll my eyes, "I have some talent that makes me a girl."
"Yeah because we know how your clothing skill goes," Kelly says, referring to my mismatched socks. One was long and purple, while the other was white and short. I also had a baggy yellow sweatshirt on and grey leggings.
"She doesn't have style for herself, but she did pick out my dress," Jolene puts in.
"I am honestly not sure if that's a complement or not. But if I'm truthful, I only saw that dress because I was looking for anything with pockets," I shrug.
"And you found them!" Jolene points to her red dress, hanging up.
"Yes, she did," Kelly says, going to inspect the casual, but nice dress.
"Done," I say when I finish Jolene's mascara.
"It's awesome," She says, inspecting herself in a mirror, "Can you curl my hair too?"
"Sorry, my hair talent stops at ponytails," I admit.
"Ponytails and braids to hide your face. If only you'd let other people touch your hair. I could do such cool things with it that would broaden the styles you have," Kelly complains, fingering my long ponytail.
