Once, mermaids thrived in the seas across the world. For a while they lived in peace separately from the humans... until many reports and stories of mermaids singing beautiful songs to allure humans to their doom were made. The humans then begin to fear mermaids.
The stories of mermaids drowning people were all false however, the true culprits were misinformation of people mixing up the half-bird sirens and mermaids, but regardless the damage had already been done, and the mermaids distanced themselves away from sirens and humans. The elder mermaids made singing illegal in order to not be associated with sirens.
Many years have passed since the last sighting of mermaids, and they are now believed to be just a myth.
On one night, a royalty of an island sailed out alone in the middle of the night for a breath of fresh air, when they spotted a slender looking figure on a rock with a fish tail. They were bewildered, but also excited for they always have wanted to meet a mermaid. So the royalty paddled as fast as they could to that rock, wanting a closer look. Now that they were closer to the mermaid, it was apparent that the feminine looking mythic was a merman instead, but that made them even more excited than ever, for any records of mermen were rare. The royalty sketched down every single detail of the merman on their sketchbook, wanting to savour the moment... When suddenly-
"My is it unusual for a human to sail out this far to the ocean in the dead of the night. Do you want to die?"
"?!"
The merman swam towards the boat while the royalty was preoccupied with sketching him.
"C-can it be... A merman in the flesh?! Talking to me?!" Their voice was shaky, but it was moreso out of excitement rather than fear.
"Let me see..." The merman grabbed the sketchbook out of the royalty's shaky hands from behind them. "Please don't get the page wet Mr Merman!" They panicked.
After a while of examining, he laughed returned the rest to the royalty. "Why did you draw me singing, kid?"
"Because... Mermaids and merman sing right? At least that's what they say in the stories...can I hear you sing?" They requested politely with sparkles in their eyes.
"I could, but..."
He got closer to their ear, fangs almost touching it.
"... It'll cost you your life."
The royalty's heart stopped momentarily upon hearing the price, a cold shiver ran through their spine, and they finally shook out of real fear.
"Why? Why must you kill me...after I hear your voice? Oh I know! You're joking right? Is that a common prank you mer-people pull on humans?"
"Sadly not. Singing is a big taboo for us now... But there is one loophole: if I kill you immediately after my performance, no one will ever know that I've sung. I know cause I've done that before..."
The royalty was frozen stiff. They were immensely curious about the merman's singing voice but also knew they had a land to govern and people to lead back home, and could not risk throwing it away. But at the same time they knew how much they would regret not taking the opportunity to listen to the famously acclaimed deadly bewitching voice of the mer-people in the stories they had read as a kid.
Conflicted between responsibilities and temptation, they made their choice.
"I promise not to tell a soul, so please let me... Hear your voice."
"Hmm I can't be sure of that... Although you seem like a good human, I still don't trust them."
Negotiation failed, but the royalty was still determined to have his life and his request granted, and decided to gamble to win it all.
"Mermaids are said to be incredibly beautiful and charming but how about mermen? ...Shall we have a bet? I bet that you wouldn't be able to make me fall for you in 3 days. If you fail to make me fall for you within 3 days next year around this time, you'll show me and my people your singing voice without killing anyone and live in my castle as a good luck mascot!." Without thinking, they declared confidently.
"Oh?" The merman got a little curious. "And what's in it for me?"
The royalty racked their brains hard, trying to find something the merman would like. "...My life..."
"Not enough."
"...The country...?"
"More."
"I'll give you my servants... And you can have a free bride or husband from one of my people!"
"Not interested. How about I drown the entire country along with its people?"
"That's too much!"
"Too much?" The merman's expression changed. "You're telling me... A mere piece of land and a couple of human lives sinking down to the ocean is 'too much' compared to the worth of my voice?"
"You're cruel..."
"When I sang for others they didn't bat an eye dying after my performance. It was a peaceful death... But for you? I'll make sure your death will be a slow painful one."
The royalty gulped, unable to take their eyes away from the deadly merman...
Soon dawn approached.
"You better go home little lord. And... don't forget the bet." He licked his lips.
Then the merman swam away and vanished. The royalty paddled back to their country and never told anyone about what happened that night. Soon the royalty would treat that entire meeting as a dream and would forget about it months later, but the merman did not forget.
