Back to the Sea

A year has passed since the bet, and the merman still has not forgotten, infact he has been waiting for the day anxiously. Although he suggested to the royalty that if he won the entire island and the population will drown... But it seems like he wants something else now other than more deaths.

He wants... Marriage.

He tried to hide this last time but the day the royalty spoke to him... Was the first time in years he had a conversation with another.

Mermen were at the bottom of the mermaid hierarchy because they were not deemed attractive enough compared to their counterparts, and he was rather frowned upon by his mermen peers too due to having a little bit of siren lineage in his bloodline. Though as much as he tries to push the blame of the sudden violent tendencies he has to his siren ancestor, he too knows that it is a result of not having someone by his side to comfort and stop him when he gets out of hand. Yes... A companion. And with a completely sound mind he has decided to change the prize of the bet from destruction to forcing the royalty to become a mermaid too and marry him.

It was pricey, but he bought a magical potion that can turn humans into mermaids from the deep web market. How he got the money is not important.

The merman readied himself, he drank another potion he bought from the deep web--- the one that changes mermaids into humans. The change was permanent, but the antidote (as well as the antidote for the other potion) to turn back into a mermaid was stored in the pendant he always wore. After consuming the dubious liquid, he slowly closed his eyes and let the current from the storm drift him.

The next day, he was washed up ashore on the island country the royalty ruled over as a naked human man only with his pendant. The royalty's subordinates clothed and carried him over to the castle for interrogation, suspecting he is an illegal immigrant. The merman came to his senses and realized that he could not speak at all no matter how hard he tried, and deduced it was a side effect of the potion. The merman did not know how to write their language either, and experienced uneasiness for the very first time in his life.

Soon the royalty came into the interrogation room and decided to take care of the merman and be his guardian. The merman  thought it was a poor decision for a ruler of a country to make, but was secretly relieved inside. However...

"Hmm we gotta give you a name. How about Kaito? Since you were found by the sea after a terrible storm that was like a battle..."

The royalty did not remember the merman at all.

I guess this is fine, anyways the bet would be unfair if they already knew who I was... I can just win this easily, drink the antidote and surprise them. Yet...

The uneasy feeling was still there.

And so the first day passed and things went relatively smooth.

The second day came and the royalty took the merman, now named Kaito out to many places. They were interacting as good as close friends already, so with just a little more push Kaito the human could win this the next day.

On the morning of the third day... Kaito woke up and excitedly ran towards the pier from the castle for today he would be riding a proper boat with the royalty. But then he saw another person next to them, holding up a ring...

He could not hear their conversation from that distance and did not want to.

Apparently the royalty was already engaged with another royalty from a smaller nearby island, and they finally proposed. The boat trip was actually for the royalty to meet the soon-to-be in-laws and Kaito was only coming along to help carry the gifts to be sent.

All he wanted to do at that moment was to push the threat and the royalty into the waters and drown them, but he was a cowardly merman too, and only silently watched the two from afar behind a pillar.

Of course, they're a ruler they need to marry someone with power and wealth for their country... I am just but a lowly merman who killed people just to sing. I cannot hide my true nature.

He removed his pendant, and buried it in the sand out of frustration.

The boat arrived, and the royalty couple entered with their servants, only with Kaito tugging behind feeling like the odd one out.

Kaito didn't even felt like seducing the human he loved anymore, he just wanted to go back to the sea and go back to his old habits of drowning humans who beg to listen to his song. However as the boat departed he somehow daydreamed about a life of the human he loved being a mermaid and living a happy mer-riage life. His mind drifted to a life where he loses the bet and becomes the pet and good-luck charm of the island and did not mind for that to be reality either. But each time he thought of reality, he would sulk.

"You alright Kaito? Are you seasick?"

Seasickness would have felt much better for him that the heaviness of unrequited love he felt. Now that he thought about it, so far the royalty he loved has only being treating him more like a child than of great admiration and awe as last year, and he sulked harder.

Suddenly the skies turned dark and the boat shooked violently.

"I thought there would be no storms today! Hold my hand Kaito!" The royalty grabbed the hand of Kaito while holding on to the boat. Kaito could not help but look at their face and notice the striking similarities it had to the time he met them last year.

Ah so, was I as frightening as this mere storm that night to you?

Once again, the merman cursed himself for being born as such a monster.

"Ugh...I can't..." The royalty's body was soon going to fall into the sea.

Kaito without thinking pushed the royalty away from the edge of the boat and lost balance instead, falling into the sea.

"Kaito!" They couldn't grab his hand in time.

He plunged into the sea... Finally learning first-hand how it was like to drown as a human.

I shouldn't have left my pendant in the beach... But this is attornment afterall. Goodbye my beloved...

A few minutes after Kaito fell into the water, the storm subsided and the weather was peaceful again. But the royalty insisted on cancelling the visit to the other island, and came back to their island, crying alone.

"Oh Kaito... Why..."

Tossing and turning on the sandy beach, they were mourning the loss of their newly made friend, until when they found something hard in the soft sand. They dug it up and behold it was a pendant with a pretty deep blue that had some liquid in it. The royalty knew they saw this pendant somewhere before in one of their dreams, but could not exactly remember who wore it. Tears welled up in their eyes again not remembering someone who was important to them.

Many years later from then on, the royalty kept on painting the same exact image of Kaito, but never the lower half for they could not remember what it looked like.
