it's serious topic time because i have just witnessed at least one person here who i don't think understands. if you're ever going to read any of my spam book posts all the way through, make it this one.
i have realized that being passive is not enough. you can't just sit and not be racist, you need to be actively anti-racist because guess what? if you're white, you have privilege. recognize it. use it to fight inequality.
nobody is saying that if you are white you don't have it hard. there are many other forms of privilege : being heterosexual, cisgender, male, wealthy. you might have it bad, but your race is not the reason.
nobody is saying that if you are hispanic or asian or native american that you don't have it hard either, because you do. white privilege affects your life too.
what we are saying is that we recognize that everybody has problems but at this moment, some are more severe. if we were at the same restaurant at the same time and i had a heart attack while you sprained your ankle, i would get medical attention first. that's not to say that your pain is not pain or that your problems are less valid, but my situation is life or death so it has to take precedence.
#blacklivesmatter doesn't mean other lives don't. it is calling attention to the fact that society has been treating black people like their lives don't matter, but they do. this isn't about anybody else, so don't you dare make it about yourself by saying "all lives matter" in response.
and if you want proof that there's a difference in the way they are treated? there's plenty.
