Gun and runaways

Lena looked at her brother tears in his eyes. Was there mother really gone, or had they just imagined all of this, maybe she had survived. "Sean, do you still have the gun," Lena asked all of a sudden after checking that Daniel was still asleep. "Uh, y...yeah I do," he said taking it out of the bag. "Okay give it to me," Pena held her hand out as Sean handed it to her. She looked at it taking out the mag and putting the safety on it. "This gun killed someone, if we throw it away now and the police finds it we are screwed, keep the gun hidden in your bag I'll take the mag, and only use it when it's your only fucking choice, now we have to turn off our phones as well, I have a little plastic bag we can put out SIM cards in but we have to throw our phones away," she explained to his putting the guns mag in a bag she had grabbed she took a bobby-pin to take out the SIM card of her phone putting it in a small plastic bag followed by Sean's SIM card.

"We leave tomorrow at dawn, if they throw a search party to find us, we are dead," Lena said taking one of the two blankets and pulled it over her brothers. Sean just nodded as Lena took the other blanket.

Lena groaned as the early morning sun woke her up. Lena was never really a morning person same for Sean while Daniel, Daniel was definitely a morning person. Lena sat up as she quickly switched shirts and her high heel shirt boots for a pair of sneakers she had in her bag. She stood up seeing that the fire had died out she softly woke up Daniel and Sean saying they had to hurry. "Come on guys, we gotta keep moving," she slowly shook them left and right until Sean sat up. "Yeah you're right," Sean's aid sleepy waking up Daniel while Lena walked to the nearby lake to fill there water bottles. "Come on, we have a long road ahead," she said seeing Sean's sleepy face while Daniel was awake. "Where is mom," he asked a bit confused. "She uh...you don't remember she couldn't come, some last moment work," Sean lied looking at his little brother. "Come on, let's go," Lena said turning her back to Daniel hoping he'd get the hint to get on her back. He rushed over to her while she handed her bag to Sean she felt Daniel jump on her back. Daniel wrapped his arisen around Lena her neck while she held Daniel by his legs. "You ready," she asked looking at her little brother. He gave her a quick nod and off they were, into the forest, away from there familiar home.

Lena was exhausted why did something like this have to happen near summer. She whipped some sweat of her forehead looking behind her once in a while checking into Daniel and Sean. Lena turned around abruptly when she heard Sean raise his voice. "Hell no Daniel, Yeah I was there too," he said Lena couldn't quite hear what Daniel said bit to got more clear as she approached them. Sean was trying to force Daniel to walk. "I hate it when you act like this," Sean said groaning getting annoyed. "Okay, calm down," Lena said removing Sean's grip on Daniels wrist. "I know I told you that we had to keep walking but he is nine and he's tired, talk to him try to convince him with something fun," she said before pushing Sean towards Daniel. "Can't you jus...," "no, now that you got time, you gotta be there for him more, be the fun brother," Lena said smiling at Sean and Daniel. After a while Daniel stood up while Sean fake scream hearing Daniel howling. "Oh no the little wolf is gonna get me," Sean said grabbing Lena by the side of her arms pretending to hide form Daniel as Lena just laughed seeing her two brothers so happy. Daniel jumped at Lena wrapping his arms around her arms holding her tight while grabbing Sean's hoodie. "Got you," he yelled proud, both Lena and Sean congratulated Daniel while begging for there lives. "Fine, I'll spare you, but until we get a candy bar, you are mine," Daniel said in all seriousness. Lena laughed messing up Daniels hair agreeing to the deal. Daniel pushed Lena's hand away telling her to stop.

"Come on, this way," Lena said looking at the entrance of a picnic place. Lena decided they had to get closer into the woods for safety as they neared mount Rainier, because more and more cars full of people would drive by. "My feet hurt," Daniel said falling down on a picnic table bench. "Same here," Sean said sitting down as well. Lena just chuckled opening her bag. It was the bag she had packed for her trip with her family. She grabbed some sandwiches and handed them to her brothers. Daniel quickly grabbed if stuffing it in his mouth while Sean gave Lena a small thank you before doing the same.

"Okay, we are nearing a gas station, if we can make it there we can stock up on some food and then we will have to keep moving," Lena explained showing Sean and Daniel the map. Daniel sat down on the ground groaning. "My feet hurt, I wanna go home," Daniel said looking up at Sean and Lena. "I know, but we can't, I promised...mom we'd make it, I know you're tired but when we get to the gas station I'll buy you your favorite candy bar and we'll get some time to rest our feet okay," Lena said holding her hand out. "Can I sit on your shoulders," Daniel asked looking at Sean. Lena let out a chuckle helping Daniel into Sean's shoulder and of they were off again.

Lena saw the gas station seeing that Sean was exhausted now as well. "Come on Daniel," she helped Daniel off Sean's shoulders and handed Sean his own bag again. Daniel rushed over to the door of the gas station and rushed in. "Daniel slow down," Lena yelled running after him. Sean looked around they were in the middle of no where there was a family sitting on a picnic table and there were two cars parked while a third one was actually getting fuel. "We didn't do anything...," Sean mumbled to himself before walking into the gas station himself.

He saw Daniel looming between the candy bars as Lena was grabbing two 1L bottles of water and some bread. "How much money do we have," Sean asked seeing some camping gear when he joined Lena. "Not enough for that," she said looking at the camping gear herself. "We could have Daniel distract...," "even if we did, we wouldn't have enough space or time to put to somewhere," Lena said grabbing some other essentials before walking to the register.

Daniel walked over to a overweight man with a brown beard who was typing away. "Watcha doing," Daniel asked looking at the laptop. "Oh...uh, I... I don't think this is for you... it's m...my work," the man said a bit unsure. Sean stepped in stopping Daniel and softly pushing him away. "Sorry for my brother, he can be...a lot sometime," Sean said looking at the mans laptop. "I...uh, I'll leave you too it," Sean said a bit freaked out. "Oh yeah, it's nothing weird tho, I mean why wouldn't these people be allowed to live their lives how they want to if they're not hurting anyone with it," the man said. "Uh...yeah I hear you," Sean said smiling at the man. "So you seems bit young to be on the road alone with your brother, where are you going," he asked. "South, and I'm with my sister as well, so we're good," he said not wanting to trust him just yet. "Well, you'll learn the most on the road, so have fun, I could talk for hours but have to get back to work," the man turned to his laptop after he said goodbye to Sean and started typing again.

Sean smiles at Lena seeing Daniel looking behind the counter. When he joined his little brother he was looking at a cat. "Who's she," Daniel asked at the older woman behind the register. "No idea, was left near the road," the woman said as Daniel started petting it. "Can we have it," Daniel asked looking up at Sean. "Let me talk to Lena about it," "we have to have adults take care of him," the woman said stopping Sean from calling Lena. "She's right Dan." Sean held out his hand for Daniel to grab it and walk with him. "Bye buddy," Daniel said to the cat walking out with Lena and Sean.

The three said down on the picnic table as the family before them had left. "Let's go over the plan and where to go next," Lena said grabbing the free map she had taken from the gas station.
