As we walked on the footpath towards the river students from our school came by. But they didn’t just pass us. As soon as they saw Scott they went into predator mode. And before I knew it Scott was in a physical fight with the leader of the pack.
So my shy nobody self decided to be the bigger person and leap into the action before something got seriously injured. I pulled Scott away from the other guy, which I recognised as our school bully, Jay. But Jay reacted too late and ended slapping me in the face.
Swearing loudly Jay started to walk away. I had fallen onto Scott, which made him even madder. But it was too late for Jay, cause he had officially pissed me off.
I got up off Scott and and slapped the Jay’s face. ‘Don’t mess with me or I’ll tell everyone what happened to you last Wednesday’. I blurted, instantly regretting it. Jay narrowed his eyes. ‘Don’t be silly you don’t even know me’. I lent towards him and whispered in his ear his secret. His eyes widened and he pushed me to the ground kicking me in the ribs. ‘You horrible person, don’t you tell a soul’ he hissed. ‘And what if did, I’ve got plenty more from where they came from’ I said, wincing at the pain he had caused, but not backing down from this fight. ‘You’ll be sorry’ he said walking away.
As soon as Jay had completely gone I went into panic mode. ‘Oh no, no, no’ I murmered, getting up. I paced up and down the footpath close to tears running my hands through my hair. ‘Woah woah calm down’ Scott said embracing me. I just hugged him back, as I didn’t know what else to do, besides it's nice to be comforted. ‘Let’s get to the river’ he said as the hug was becoming awkward. And we walked on in a not so uncomfortable silence.
Once we got there we sat on a seat and started to talk. ‘How’s your face’ Scott asked. Honestly, it still stung, and there was still a red handprint. I just shrugged. ‘What about your ribs’ he questioned. I didn’t reply for a while cause really my ribs were killing me and there would certainly be bruising, but I didn’t want to be a wimp so again I shrugged.
Scott tilted his head to one side then caught me off guard and poked me in the ribs, only lightly but it really hurt. I hissed in pain and stared at him about to say something nasty. ‘So they did hurt you bad.’ Scott said, looking murderous.
‘Why was Jay messing with you anyway’ I said, easing the topic onto something more important. ‘Well he and his group are bullies’ Scott said pointing out the obvious. I rolled my eyes ‘and they were bullying you. But what for’ I said deciding that if I was going to speak now's the time. ‘I dunno, I guess I’ve just been an easy target.’ He stated, though I felt it wasn't the entire truth. But I didn't question him any further as I barely knew Scott.
'Well all I see you doing at school is fighting, doesn’t that count as some sort of defence, you’re not that easy of a target’. I said, offering my advice for his excuse. ‘I think your problem is the fact that you react to them. If you ignored those bullies they wouldn’t get any satisfaction out of making your life misery. Don’t let people get the better of you, they shouldn’t make you cry. You’re stronger than that’. I finished, feeling like a therapist. I scanned his face for a reaction, which I thought looked kinda uncomfortable and possibly guilty.
‘Okay thanks’ Scott said. ‘What about you?’ he said, focusing on me. ‘What do you mean?’ I asked, trying to dodge the question. ‘Don’t try act dumb. You’ve been spying on me and turns out you know a lot about people. But I never see you socialising. What’s the deal?’ he said stated looking at me waiting for an answer, which I took a while to create. I scuffed my shoes into the dirt and watched the ripples in the river.
I gave him an answer eventually. It was all 100% true what I said, but that's cause I didn't say much. I still barely knew Scott and was not comfortable sharing secrets with him just yet.
‘Well, I don’t have any friends. So I use my time observing people and learning all about them without having to say a word. I’ve been doing this for a while and gathering a few secrets.’ I said casually, crinkling my nose.
‘Well, you aren’t friendless anymore, you've definitely made a friend in me.’ Scott said. ‘Okay Scott, same to you’ I mumbled with a small smile on my face. ‘Aaaaaannd your name?' Scott asked ‘Oh, well it’s Natasha but please just call me Nat.’ I said sitting awkwardly, still a little insecure. Scott put his arm around me. ‘Well Nat, tell me more about these secrets.’
I sat there slowly melting into Scotts grip debating whether I should tell him.
