"I was pregnant" the words chocked out of Hoorain. Her wide teary eyes looked up at the doctor as her hands rested on her stomach. Her heart aches as the tears streamed down her face.
He killed my baby.
Broken, Hoorain laid back on the hospital bed. With blank eyes, she started up at the ceiling.
"I'm sorry, I assumed your brother had told you." The doctor sighed as she glanced at Umair. Turning around, the doctor checked through all the machines Hoorain was hooked up to.
Umair sat down on a chair next to his sister's bed. He reached out and grabbed her fragile hand, rubbing small circles with his thumb. He watched helplessly as fat tears rolled down Hoorain's cheeks.
"I'm sorry for your loss Ms. Sayd." the doctor placed her hands on Hoorain's shoulder, "this will be a very traumatic experience for you," she turned to Naina, who was standing next her, "therefore I have prescribed a therapist for miscarriage and I'm also prescribing your sister-in-law with medications, paracetamol to be precised, she will have to take them for at least two weeks, until the bleeding is over." Naina nodded,
"when will she be discharged, Dr. Jace?" Umair spoke up, lifting his head, his swollen red eyes, brimming with tears came into view.
"I would like to keep her in observation for tonight, make sure all the remaining clots from her miscarriage are out, and tomorrow she'll be discharged. I will go over everything she will need tomorrow before we discharge her." The doctor handed Naina the prescription.
"Doctor, I already have a therapist you don't need to assign a new one for me." With shaky hands, Hoorain wiped away her tears. "Hoorain, this is a special therapist for your situation." Naina lightly smiled at the torn woman.
Hoorain's blank eyes stared up at her brother's wife. "I have a therapist from when I had my last miscarriage."
Hearing the words that came out of Hoorains mouth, Naina gasped, "you have had another.." she trailed off as she grabbed Hoorains hand. Her wide eyes stared at the girl on the bed. How much pain had they put her through, she thought, no wonder she wanted to kill herself. Ya Allah, give this poor girl patience.
"This is my third miscarriage." A sob left Hoorains mouth. Naina immediately wrapped her arms around Hoorains shaking body. "And it's always been his fault." She cried into her sister-in-law's shoulder.
Hoorain's heart broke into tiny small pieces, like a shattered glass. Tiny pieces were scrambled around, the strings of her heart barely hanged on. Her chest hurt as she let out loud gasps. Her eyes stung with fresh tears each time she blinked her eyes. She was defeated. She was lost. They snatched away her hopes and dreams from her. She dreamed of having a child, bringing them up in a way she never was, loving them in the way she never was.
"That it!" Umair stood up in rage. His heartbeat increased, his face had turned red, and he felt hot all over. His body shook with anger as his jaws clenched. His muscles tensed. He stormed out the hospital room. His anger increased as the seconds went by. The people passing by the halls watched as the furious man walked out the hospital.
"No, no, no, no," Hoorain chanted with wide eyes, "you need to stop him, you need to stop him!" She stared up at Naina with big red eyes, panicked.
Naina stood confused as she tried to figure out what was going on. Stress had made her head hurt.
"Hoorain, take a deep breathe, nothing will happen to him, okay." Naina tried to calm Hoorian down. Hoorain nodded as tears silently left her eyes.
"You will never have to go through this again! You will never have to feel this pain again Hoorain," Naina promised as she took Umair's little sister's fragile hands into hers, "we will keep you safe. You will never have to worry about anything from now on." Hoorain watched as she wrapped her arms around Naina. "Thank you."
Both stayed in each other's arms as their minds raced with worry about the man they loved.
Naina began mumbling a small lullaby, in hope of Hoorain getting some rest.
"Just close your eyes,
the sun is going down
You'll be all right,
no one can hurt you now
Come morning light,
you and I'll be safe and sound"
When she looked at Hoorain, the girl was fast asleep. Naina gently laid Hoorain on her bed and wrapped her in the blankets the hospital provided.
She slowly sat down on the chair beside the bed. She reached for her purse that hung in the chair. She pulled her phone out, dialing the number she knew by heart. Bitting her lips, she brought the phone to her ear, "Naina, is everything okay?" She smiled as his worried voice and the sound of brief laughters filled her ears. "You never call me at 9 am, you're normally asleep." He chuckled.
"I'm in the hospital." She spoke softly into the phone, "you're in the hospital?!" He exclaimed.
"what happened is everything okay," another voice replaced the other. Naina let out a sigh, "Nuh, stop acting dramatic," knowing her twin was at the verge of freaking out, "I'll explain everything later, I'm fine." She heard three sighs of relief."I need you to figure out where Umair is, Bhai" her older brothers worry voice came through the phone, "where did he go? I need you to tell me what happened." Naina turned to look at Hoorain who was fast asleep.
"Hoorain" she whispered out. She heart her brother choke at the name as she bit her lips. She knew what happened to her brother with the mere mention of her. She nervously bit her lips.
There was a pregnant pause, before her brother spoke up, "what," he sighed "what about her, is she okay?"
"we found her-" Naina thought about how to tell her brother she tried jumping off a bridge, "she wasn't in the best condition so we brought her to the hospital, something's were said and Umair is furious, I have no idea where he went, but I have feeling her went to..." Naina trailed off knowing her brother would catch on.
"Dont worry I'll find him, you take care of her." Her brother's worried voice spoke, "just take care of her for me."
Naina bit her lips before she spoke up again "you still love her don't you Noor?"
