I backed up as quickly as I could as the eyes grew closer, slowly stopping just before the moonlight. From behind the trees, the silhouette of a guy appeared. I stared as he stepped closer, still trembling from fear and the adrenaline flooding through my body. Thankfully, he paused at the edge of the treeline, just close enough where I could make out his features.
"Hi," I stepped back sharply, holding onto the tree as my eyes widened in surprise. I felt my panic only rise when I realised that I was smaller than him, and that if it were to come down to a fight, I would lose. Maybe if I ran, I could reach the house before him, as I was pretty fast when I needed to be...
"Don't panic, I'm not going to do anything," His voice was deep and smooth, and in pretty much any other situation would've been calming to listen to, but my grip on the tree only tightened as I edged backwards slowly, hoping to put the tree between us without him growing suspicious. The forest didn't seem safe anymore, despite the scenery still being as serene as ever.
My eyes followed him as he stepped closer once more, my body jolting backwards in response. He held his hands out, showing me that he had nothing in them, before slowly crouching down, keeping his eyes on me. Now that the moonlight was able to touch him, I could make out more than his silhouette.
He was beautiful. There was no other word to describe him other than that – maybe enchanting, other-worldly, perfect... Sharp cheek bones, sharp jawline, straight nose, dark eyebrows framing bright blue eyes that seemed to pierce through me, dark hair falling across his forehead and when his a strand fell across his face as he knelt, he shook his head to the side to shift it, a small smirk on his face.
"I go by Aharon, what is your name?" I kept my eyes on him, watching him as he slowly put on hand on the floor to balance himself, then shifted as to sit down properly.
"It's polite to introduce yourself to another, don't you think?" My confusion was throwing my fear off. I had lived here for my entire life, had wandered through the forests for days, and yet I had never seen this guy, or anyone else for that matter. It was very rare that I ever saw anyone of my own age, living so far out, and it wasn't as though I had any friends to bring back here – I doubted that many people in town even knew that I existed. Which led to the obvious question of why this guy was here, and why he apparently knew that I was here too.
"Well?" I leant my shoulder against the tree, now hiding half of my body behind it.
"You can call me Fay," I mumbled. He let out a low chuckle at my answer but brushed over his amusement and I was too cautious to bring it up.
"Well, Fay, it's nice to meet you," He paused a second, watching for my response. I just hoped that he couldn't see my face slowly turning red.
"And you," I replied quietly. His eyes followed my every movement, or rather, lack of. They seemed to be almost glowing in the dark.
"I don't mean to frighten you, I won't cause you any harm, I only want to talk," My head tilted to the side slightly as my curiosity began to overwhelm me. I was still trembling slightly, but it was more so due to the cold than my fear now. My grandmother had always told me that curiosity killed the cat, and yet I played the role so well every time.
"Why don't you come and sit down for me?" My knees almost buckled at the sudden want to sit down. I tried to play off my sudden alarm, clinging desperately onto the tree and now fighting the sudden want to do what he had asked. Inner turmoil instantly erupted within me as I tried to panic – there was no alarm bells ringing in my mind anymore, no sense of danger other than my logic; I felt perfectly safe around him. And yet, my logic was trying to drive me insane, screaming at me that I had to go, that I had to turn and sprint back to the house immediately, before I was dragged into the forest and at the mercy of this guy.
