'Cause I need you now but I don't know you yet
But can you find me soon because I'm in my head?- IDK You Yet by Alexander 23

Dinner was tense that night, even more so than usual. And, like usual, I was completely unaware of the reason why. There hadn't been any new arguments recently, other than the usual spats, but as we sat in a heavy silence, only the sounds of the cutlery scraping across the plates, I couldn't help but force down my food as quickly as possible, wanting to escape the situation.
Alessio, at request of my mother, had made a fresh salad and a light soup for dinner, served alongside fresh bread. It was a good meal and one of my mother's favourites, yet I knew that there was no way she would be able to enjoy it whilst sitting in the same room as my grandmother. My grandmother was trying to eat her soup, but with her shaking hands, kept knocking the spoon against the edge of the bowl. I watched my mother's eye twitch in annoyance at the continuous tapping until finally, she snapped, slamming down her fork.
"We know you're here, mother," She spat, eyes narrowing at her. "You do not need to continuously remind us of that," I could see my grandmother tense as she glared at my mother, fury almost instantly rolling off her in waves.
"You would do well to mind your own business," She replied, her voice taking on that sharp tone she only ever used to address my mother.
"You would do well to be more agreeable," My mother practically hissed.
"Child, there is nothing disagreeable I am doing!"
"Well, I disagree!"
"I am ashamed to have raised something with an attitude like this!" My grandmother admonished, her attitude as cold as ever.
"I'm embarrassed for you that you even have the nerve to claim that!" My mother heatedly shot back. They were like fire and ice, my mother snapping back and determined to burn, my grandmother coldly rejecting it and freezing her out.
"Child, I raised you in my home, and that is fact!"
"You barely even spoke to me, let alone raised me,"
"Nonsense! You're being ridiculous!"
"You failed as a mother and you know it." She hissed. I froze, watching my grandmother tense before she forcibly relaxed her shoulders.
"What a pity you have the face of an angel and not the mind of one," She snapped haughtily. I started to fidget as their argument quickly turned into personal insults. I swallowed harshly, now focused on simply eating and leaving rather than appreciating the meal.
"At least I have the face of an angel, what do you have? Nothing!" Subtly, I crept out of the room, leaving them to their arguments. They couldn't even make it until after dinner before fighting.
"Thank you, Alessio," I called out from the kitchen doorway. He turned and gave me a small smile.
"Are they arguing again?" I nodded, slipping into the room and jumping onto one of the counters where he wasn't working.
"Shame, I was hoping your mother would enjoy the soup. I tried a new recipe today and wanted to see if it was to her liking," I ignored how even Alessio was entranced by my mother. At least he never commented about her often whilst I was around.
