⚠️Cursing & mentions of abuse⚠️
(Y/N) POV
I never really had a normal childhood honestly, my parents were two big scientist for the CDC. Despite my dad saying he wasn't they were always my biggest inspirations I wanted to one day save the world like they do. Helping stop viruses, nasty infections, and a lot of other things well except for this one we don't know what it is . None of us do it was slow at first but it started to rise and mutate it was impossible to stop. They had the military deployed at our doors every ten minutes we'd hear their guns go off while trying to figure out a solution. We had one of the infected in the labs to collect DNA and skin samples trying to figure out what's wrong. Eventually people saw what was happening on tv worried for themselves and their family they ended up leaving. A couple stayed with hope which we were all glad for, but eventually they left too. One day the guns just stopped all that was left were groans and screams of their victims. We had to work harder than ever now knowing those things were at our door step. We had tried and tried then the power cut the city was dead we were lucky enough to have generators to keep us going. One day while getting a skin sample my mom had gotten too close before a word could even fall from my lips that thing had torn through my mother's suit and into her flesh. My father and I were devastated, though she wanted something good to come out of this she had told us to record her vitals and brain activity.
Eventually she had succumbed to the virus and we had to well put her down. During this time my father began to drink heavily this started to effect his mood and his work. He wasn't doing to well in his studies to fix the problem he only became one himself. Soon enough sectors began to shut down my father kept logs of the days while sipping his wine. One day he had a mishap in the lab and had a whole decontamination ruining the rest of our skin samples. There was nothing else we could do besides sit here and wait for the inevitable. In his drunken stupors he had turned to verbally abusing me it's only gotten physical maybe a handful of times. I knew he never meant the things he said I knew I didn't kill mom but it was hard sometimes. I really wish I had the company of others rather than Vi and a drunk father, but it is what it is I doubt there were any survivors left. I'm so used to being alone I wouldn't know how to act if we did stumble across any I was never that good with social commentary in the first place.
Sitting at the table looking through old papers while my father was making one of his stupid vlogs there was a voice, no, voices. My father about spit out his wine I rushed over to the look at the cameras with him. It was a sheriff, women, children, and men my eyes lit up 'people' this was magnificent.
"You're killing us! We have women and children! You're killing us!" the man hollered.
"Dad let them in!" I yelled while reaching for the button, but his finger was already on it.
Sighing he got up heading towards the door as I rushed pasted him eager to meet our new guest. I would be able to finally speak without being hounded. My father rounded the corner gun in hand while I slowed my pace following in his step. Seeing as they were all in I hit the other button to close and lock the door so the unwanted dead couldn't mosey on in here behind em. They were fully locked and loaded on guard bags on their backs they looked ruff. He held his arm out for me signaling to wait he held the gun on his hip starring at them.
"Are any of you infected?" my father called out.
"One of our group was, didn't make it" the police man said calmly.
My dad took a step forward "what do ya want?"
"A chance," at this point I had zoned out while going over each member of the group. They looked tired and dirty like they hadn't slept or properly eaten for days. There was an odd man with deep dark hair and almost black eyes, an Asian, a redneck, a little girl, an African American woman and man, a little boy with bright blue eyes, same as the woman holding him, an older gentlemen, and a blonde. There was something cruel hiding behind the first ones eyes he looked mad at the world.
"You all submit to a blood test price of admission, once that door closes it stays closed," He grabbed my arm pulling me out from behind him and giving me a nudge toward the elevator.
"This way guys," I said with a smile motioning towards the empty metal death trap. If I'm being honest I hate elevators they could just fall at any given moment no warning no nothing.
My father had gotten antiquated with the sheriff while I wait to be spoken too like I was taught. It was rude if I didn't I wouldn't want to jump in an important conversation. We were all packed in the elevator shoulder to shoulder. Breathe in and breathe out you're fine. I was standing between the curly haired man and my father when the man without sleeves decided to speak up.
"Doctors always go carrying around heat like that?" he asked.
"There were plenty left lying around thought I'd familiarize myself, but you look harmless enough," he smiled while looking down at the little boy, "except you I'm gonna have to keep my eye on you."
Sure enough, the kid smiled back and quickly looked at the floor. I could tell my dad missed having a kid granted I was only 18 still a child though. It sucked not being a kid with no knowledge of how the world worked or anything. I quickly snapped out of it as I could feel the man shift behind me breathing down on my neck seeing as he was slouched against the wall. Shuffling my hands together the elevator stopped and we all stepped out in to the hallway. Out of the corner of my eye I see a frail woman with short grey hair getting a little antsy.
"Claustrophobic?" I asked her.
She nodded " a little, is this place under ground?"
I gave her a warm smile " try not to think about it too much dear."
She nodded again returning the smile as we reached sector five heading into the main lobby. They all had a sort of wonder in their eyes since they hadn't had electricity in sometime now.
"What about the person you were speaking with? VI?" one of the women in the back asked.
Looking towards the big computer I smiled " VI, say hello to our guests. Tell them.. Welcome."
Dad scowled at me slightly as the computers voice filled the air "Hello guests. Welcome."
The old man with a bucket hat looked shocked and the children looked amazed. I turned around to get the basic necessities for the blood testing I felt a pair of eyes on me as I was carrying the tubes over to dad. Peering over my shoulder it was the same man that was behind me in the elevator, when he caught my line of sight he quickly dropped his gaze. Snapping on a pair of gloves I turned to the rest of the group.
"So who's first?"
