i get onto the yellow metal death trap i call the bus. is there any other less humiliating mode of transportation? this girl karen,with crazy head gear, sits towards the from, luke trying to strike a conversation with her. i look out the window. reese must have gotten a ride.

"this seat taken?" michael asks.

"um...yes?" i say.

"well what can i say gorgeous?" he continues in a cocky way. "you are absolutely devine."

"what the hell?" i ask, the bus haulting to a stop, and as quickly as i can, i grab my bag and run off.

//

we head home and nana and papa are already there. of course they have my room, so i am forced to sleep on the couch tonight.

the door bell rings. i walk over to the door, and there is a boy, about my age. standing there confused.

"hello?" i say in a questioning tone.

"i'm calum." he streches out his hand, his voice sounding foreign to me. "fred and wilma call me long duck dong for some weird reason. apparently i was supposed to come from china? i don't know. they got me and this dong kid mixed up. and i'm not asian. i'm australian."

"i'm cam." i smile.

"dong!" grampa calls from the car.

"fred!" grammy calls. "you know that's not his name!"

grammy walks up to us. "ah cameron i see that you've met calum here." and she looks at my chest. "and my, have your breasts gotten perky. isn't that right calum?" i give grammy a what-the-hell-are-you-thinking look.

calum awkwardly stands there, looking away. "uh...yeah. i mean, i guess." he mutters.

"it's best that we get inside." grammy smiles, pushing past me and calum who awkwardly stand there, trying to make sense of what just happened.

//

"isn't there a dance to go to tonight at your school cam?" mom asks scooping green beans onto her plate.

"yeah." i shrug. "but nobody goes. they're lame."

"lame isn't a thing cameron." papa scolds.

"why don't you go and take calum with you?" grammy asks.

"she doesn't want to been seen in public your asian kid." paul bluntly scoffs.

"paul joseph!" dad says. "go to your room!"

paul chuckles and leaves the table, my whole family eating their food.

"dad." grace sighes and brushes her blonde hair back. "i'm not feeling that great. i'm going to head upstairs."

"whatever you need gracie." mom laughes.

"so cam and dong can go to the dance together."grampa states proudly.

"i can't drive." i sigh. "i'm only 17 and i have the curfew." i say hoping my family will pick up on the fact that it's my birthday.

"calum can." grammy annouces. "he has an american license."

"well let's get going." i clap my hands together, get up from the table, and lead calum out the door.
