COLOUR
Look at the colour of my skin.
Look at the colour of her skin.
Both skins are similar,
My skin performs the same way as hers,
Conducting the same purpose as hers.
Yet somehow they're both so different
and even sometimes blurred.
Both skins are contrasting
As to be on another level as her.
Her place in society is more important than mine,
Like being on top of the food chain while I'm sinking down with the fishing line.
And they say I'm the one who's ignorant
But I'm the one who sees the difference between her skin and mine's.
When you look at the colour of her skin you see an opportunity
And then you look at mine and all you see is a contingency.
My whole life is defined where the colour of my skin makes people hate me.
Her whole life she doesn't have to worry about this because of society
Thinking that her skin is better than mine.
Even sometimes I wished I had her skin and she could have had mine.
She is full of dreams and without a doubt
Having nothing to worry about
As the route that I was heading was all in a layout.
A plan that I had never took part in.
The plan I didn't wish for but had to deal with, all because of my skin.
The moment I was born my faith has been sealed,
Even my parents prayed a better future for me.
She was born healthy and happy
Without a worry from her family
I grew up having to deal with racism and discrimination,
She grew up not knowing the feeling of frustration
Of having to deal with the colour of my skin
And the package it all came within.
Maybe my skin is the reason,
Why I'm being judged by the ability I have as a person.
But the thing is, I'm also human like her
Not an object to identify what I can and can't do.
And I only differ
From the colour of our skins
But that doesn't change
The fact that I can also do the same things she can do
I just have limitations because that how society wants it to.
As much as I want to be like her,
I learned to deal with hatred and all the slurs.
Learned the hard way that I can only be confident.
Loving my skin is one of my commitments.
So now I will fight for my colour
Along with the others
We will bond together.
Hoping to bring justice and freedom
Using activism as part of the system,
A solution to stop all this problem.
I remember Alex Haley saying
"Racism is taught in our society"
So maybe all these authorities
Should start teaching these minorities.
Prioritizing equality
To make a better community.
And so that one day,
A child won't have to worry about her skin,
To just continue playing with all the other children.
Certain that she won't have to face rejection,
Not even separation.
To unite different skins one as a nation.
