Three plane rides and nearly thirty-three hours later, Harry and I entered the house with our newest addition in tow.
Cordelia was a sweet, albeit shy, little girl that looked almost exactly like my mother in the pictures of when she was a little girl.
Harry looked at the little girl like she was the answer to his prayers, but it was just a reminder that I was struggling to give him an addition that was part him and part me.
"I'll call Lou and have him bring Sophie home," he said, kissing me on the cheek as he pulled his phone out.
I pulled the phone from his hands and shook my head. "It is three in the morning, Harold. Let them sleep for at least another four hours. You know how Sophie gets if she's woken up too early."
"What are we doing about Miss Delia?"
I glanced at the sleeping girl in Harry's arms. "Bring her into the bedroom. She's sleeping with me tonight. She just lost her mother, and I want to be there when she wakes up again."
In the short hours that Cordelia had been awake while in our presence, she had been crying and clinging to the nearest adult. It was terribly heartbreaking.
"But what about me?"
I gave him a look that said 'are you being serious, right now'. "We have a king sized bed, Harry. I'm positive we will all fit. Do you wanna know how I know that?" He mumbled something, but she didn't bother to ask him to repeat it. "I know because you and Lou came crawling into bed one night will Zoe and I were having movie night. Then you passed out on top of us. The two of us can definitely make room for a small child. Plus, Sophie sleeps with us all the time."
"I guess," he mumbled. He carried Cordelia into our bedroom and gently laid her down in the very middle of the bed. "What are we gonna do, Rach? Sophie is gonna ask questions that we don't have the answers to and Miss Delia is probably gonna have trouble adjusting and I leave soon and-"
"Harold, take a deep breath. Count to three and then speak."
He glared at me but did as I said anyway. "I'm just worried about leaving and not being here to help you."
I kissed him on the cheek after he pulled his shirt over his head. "I'll be fine. Sophie is a smart kid, so she'll understand and be helpful. And Cordelia's my niece. I'll do anything to make her feel comfortable here."
He smiled at continued undressing. "I love you."
I smiled widely, pulling a tank top on. "Love you, too, babe."
We climbed into bed, pulling the covers up. Just as Harry reached to turn the light off, Cordelia opened her eyes.
"Are we home?"
Rachel smiled at her and smoothed her hair. "We're home. Go back to sleep, Sweetheart."
She did, and Harry and I followed soon after, with him squeezing my hands tightly, our arms resting just slightly above Cordelia's sleeping form.
When I woke up the following morning, I was alone in the bed. I got up, pulling a sweatshirt on before leaving the room. I walked through the halls towards the kitchen, where I could hear laughter.
"Mommy!" Sophie called as I walked through the door. She ran to my legs, wrapping her small arms around them. "You brought me a sister!"
"Sophie, you know that-"
Cordelia spook up from her chair. "I'm happy that I have a sister, too. I've always been an only child. Sophie says we can do sister things now, like play barbies and dress up and house and- and a lot of fun games!"
