Glamour and Empowerment

KATHY

I witnessed this incident 16 years ago.

Kathy, a 6 year old girl, an orphan, her parents were murdered and she fortunately escaped but actually she was trapped in haunting webs of Eden.

She was adopted by Mrs. Lincoln, a wealthy but an infertile woman with no motherly affections, possesses everything that a woman needs.
Mrs. Lincoln adopted Kathy because she had an beautiful appearance and not an infant. She thought she couldn't handle an infant but an older child. Kathy's wings were clipped and had no choices except to accept a life with Mrs. Lincoln.

Since the first day, Mrs.Lincoln gave Kathy a set of rules to follow which included that she couldn't call "Mom" to Mrs.Lincoln, she couldn't loiter around the house, she should sleep in her room and must do everything in time.
Mrs. Lincoln thought she was perfect herself and need everything perfect around her. Which can never be true!

Kathy complied all the rules of Mrs.Lincoln and was happy to get a room for her, the food was even good for her. Mr. Lincoln treated her with great care if compared to Mrs. Lincoln. She was happy to call "Dad" to Mr. Lincoln. He was nice to her, he brought clothes for her and discussed about her favourite things, to make her comfortable. Kathy was finally moving on from her past and Mr.Lincoln helped her in that. He cared for her in way that a father does. As usual as it was. He wasn't able to be a father ever, but being a reason of Kathy's upbringing made him feel like a father that he was deprived of for so many years.

But Mrs.Lincoln couldn't tolerate it. She was jealous of the affection and attention that her husband was giving to an adopted child. She cried in the pain of her jealous. She was infertile and couldn't give her husband the happiness of being a father was something that hit her heart continuously then. She had led a life of a strong woman who couldn't even bear a child and everyone around her mocked her for her incapability. She decided then that she couldn't handle anymore pain, she planned to make Kathy's life hell so that she may want to leave this house on her own.

Since that day Mrs.Lincoln was even more strict to Kathy, she ordered Kathy to mop the floor and wash the dishes since she hasn't applied for any school. Mrs.Lincoln fed the leftovers to Kathy before her husband arrived home. She continued that immature and unhealthy treatment to Kathy for at least one year. And Kathy tolerated every sinful deed of Mrs.Lincoln. She was threatened by her that if she opened her mouth to her husband, she would have to leave the house.
And as a 6 year old child, she was afraid to lose a life of luxury that she got again! So she kept shut.

It was the New Year Eve and Kathy's birthday. Mr.Lincoln arranged a dinner party for Kathy and Mrs.Lincoln pretended to enjoy the New Year. Kathy was happy because literally after one year she was having good food. She was happy to celebrate her 8th Birthday. She was in the seventh heaven as she received a doll as a gift from her dad. She Thanked everyone for she was enjoying a birthday.

That night, when everyone was on their terrace, watching the lanterns, candles all around, people were wishing one another and the fireworks lighting in the sky, all these were the fantasy Kathy was living in.

But the New Year Eve, turns down the evil.
A shout of Mrs.Lincoln on a far corner of their terrace distracted Kathy as she was the only one present there. Mr.Lincoln was no where to be seen. Kathy ran to Mrs.Lincoln and saw her expensive embroidered shawl had caught fire and Mrs.Lincoln cannot detach the shawl from herself.
Kathy was helpless to see Mrs.Lincoln. She ran into the house yelling for her Dad, picked up a heavy ragged sack that she used for herself and a bucket of water and ran upstairs to help Mrs.Lincoln to save her. Despite the fact that Mrs.Lincoln was a evil to her but Kathy had a heart of human who could forgive any human for their mistakes.

Mrs.Lincoln was crying and shouting for help and at that very moment, Kathy threw the water on her shawl but did not help much to extinguish the fire, so she Wrapped the heavy ragged sack on her back and told Mrs.Lincoln to sit down for she cannot reach her height to help her.
Mrs.Lincoln did and slowly the fire extinguished but her expensive embroidered shawl and the clothes behind her got burned and became ashes leaving her behind naked.

Mrs.Lincoln was sobbing for the aftershocks of that incident. Kathy went and bought a light duvet and covered Mrs.Lincoln. Mrs.Lincoln was shocked and speechless for what the little child did for her. After a moment what felt like an hour,she asked Kathy "Why did you help me when I did nothing but wrong to you?"
Kathy smiled and answered "Because I couldn't save my own parents and I couldn't let you burn infront of me, when I know you adopted me and gave a good life. I don't care what you do to me. I am thankful to you for a shelter, food, clothes and your care, that's why I helped you."
Mrs.Lincoln found herself embarrassed and hurt, "Oh,Kathy...I'm sorry dear. I won't hurt you my Daughter!" She embraced Kathy and cried till she confessed all her sins. Mr.Lincoln was watching everything, but only Kathy could see him and he was happy.
"Mom?" Kathy spelt and Mrs.Lincoln smiled and nodded.

Kathy was someone who bared me and my subdued motherly feelings. She helped me in ways that no body could. Kathy, a 22 year old girl still have the empowerment in her and I am proud to be her Mom.
