Part Two: Emerald Glyder
Chapter 1: A Not-So-Typical Day
“EMERALD CRYSTAL GLYDER GET YOUR BUTT DOWN HERE!!!”
I groaned. I hated when she shouted like that, it echoed all throughout the vault. I heard other moans rising in chorus with mine as my mother’s voice woke everyone else up as well.
I stretched and got out of bed, putting on jeans and a tee shirt. I walked bare foot through the tunnels to the kitchen. I knew what was coming.
“How many times,” She yelled as she stooped over the floor. “Have we told you and told you to let that damn thing out before bed?!”
“I’m sorry!” I yawned. “Well you’re just lucky I found it before Mrs. Preston, or she would have killed it for sure.” She said as she finished cleaning up the mess left by my pet on the kitchen floor.
I found Skippy hiding behind a table, and scooped him out, holding him to my chest.
They had found him a few months ago, injured on the outside. They brought him here to heal him, and the plan was to release him once he was healed. Not once I had seen him. I feel in love with the small brown bundle of fur and refused to let him go. I’m not sure what kind of breed he was, but he was so sweet and we formed an instant bond.
I tucked Skippy into one arm, and got out a box of cereal with the other hand.
Soon others started pouring into the kitchen, getting their breakfasts.
On weekends there were group meals, but during the week we all had our different schedules.
“Hey!” I heard a sleepy yawn as Drew sat down beside me. “Heard the ruckous this morning, what’d you do this time?” He teased.
“Forgot to let skippy into the waste center last night.”
“Ew.”
“Yup. Mom wasn’t to happy.”
“Hey you lot.” My older brother Garner and younger sister Pearl joined us at the table, along with Drew youngest sister Nancy. We all ate breakfast, then returned to our rooms to dress for classes.
“Emmy, can you please help me?” I turned around and saw Pearl tangled in a sweater. I laughed and helped her put her arms through the holes.
I heard a cough at the door, and looked up to see Drew standing there, visibly upset about something. “Can we talk?” I brought him into my closet and shut the door.
“What’s up?”
“It’s Bradly.”
“Your younger brother? What happened?”
“He asked.”
I sighed. “How bad was it?”
“Bad. The teacher who he asked smacked him too hard, my mom and dad are furious.”
“As they should be! I’m sorry, Drew.” I pulled him into a hug. I knew how much he loved Bradly, seeing him abused wasn’t easy.
“Why do they do that?! I mean do you remember the first time you asked?”
“Yeah,” I said. “I was sitting at the table, watching mom and dad eat, and I asked where they were going, and where they went each day, what they did and stuff. They just froze, looked at each other, and said “We go to work.” That’s all they ever say. When Pearl asked, she got reprimanded and told never to ask that again.”
