Part One:

Chapter 3: The Change.

Matt’s back was not…..human. There were two slots where his shoulder blades should be, and the skin was opening and closing over the slots, like a machine.

“Oh my god….” I whispered. “Matt? I think I found why your back was hurting.”

I quickly rolled Marsa over onto her stomach, as she was unconscious too. Her back had slits, the beginnings of what matt had.

“What the hell….” I muttered.

“Whoa!!!” Pete yelled. I whirled around to see Matt….but he wasn’t matt. His skin was the color of the bed sheets, pale blue. His eyes were bright green, and his ears were pointed.

The most shocking part of all…..were the dark green wings protruding from the slots in his back.

I watched in awe as he flexed them, they seemed to move as a muscle rather than an extremity.

They changed from dark green to bright blue, to black, then to a transparent clear.

Matt was sweating from the effort of controlling them. They suddenly collapsed and folded back into his back, and the skin moved to cover them. There was no trace of any slots in his back. If I hadn’t seen it, I definitely would not have believed it…..

“I’ve heard of radiation mutation before, but this is ridiculous….” Pete said.

“Tell me about it!” Said Matt.

That was about when Marsa woke up, and we had to go through it all over again.

After a week, there were 7 more cases of the illness and mysterious transformations. Pete fell ill while helping me care for another man, John. He was carrying icepacks, which seemed to control the body temperature mildly, when he blacked out and fell to the floor. We hoisted him onto a bed, and I couldn’t help but be afraid. No one had died of this illness as of yet, but seeing my husband lying there…it was different than watching the others transform. About 5 hours after Pete collapsed, I fell as well. I was standing with Matt, discussing possible ways to make the pain better, when I felt my body start to burn from deep within me.

“Wait…” I interrupted him. “Something…something’s happening to me….” I sat on the be empty bed, and sighed. I knew It was just a matter of time. “Matt, take care of Pete, will you please?”

“Why? What’s wrong Lisa?”

I never got the chance to answer him, as my vision blurred, and the world faded to black.

I awoke to Pete calling my name, and stroking my face with a cool rag.

“Lisa? Are you alright?”

“Pete? Are you okay? Did you already change?”

“Yes, I did. I have wings, just like the rest. If the time schedule is consistent, we need to get morphine into you before yours starts. Roll over, honey. It’s easier if your back is exposed.”

He and Marsa rolled me over, and I felt my entire body tense, like it was waiting to be struck by some invisible fist. They pumped the morphine into me, and in a few minutes I was high as a kite.
