I sighed, spending another night scrolling through my social medias. Honestly, politics were wack. Cops tear gassing innocent protesters, lootings during the protest taking advantage of the chaos, riots in the streets. All for a good cause, truly. I did feel a twinge of guilt for the small businesses though, considering they were getting caught in the warfare too.
And most interesting of all- at least in my opinion- was the awareness of these masked rogue hacktivists.
Anonymous.
Their masks, their ideology, their words- all burned into my mind. They were... Brilliant. Exposing a broken government for what it really is? Beautiful. I was curious of them... and so my search continued. I looked through post after post, trying to get more information on them.
My phone vibrated in my hand. A text notification appeared.
'We see you are interested in us.'
I knew who this was. Beneath the text was a googled image of a grinning mask, black abysses of eyes seeming to bore into my soul.
'We are anonymous. You have heard us. Friend, or foe?'For a moment, I stared at my screen, baffled. I was being texted by Anonymous. Was this real? Or was this some spam text sent for shits and giggles?
'Friend' I sent back, with a deep breath, and got a little smiley face in return. Not the emoji, but a little :) instead. That made me smile, too.
'Are you actually Anonymous? Or?'
The response was quick and critical.
'Are you actually Y/N L/N, living in (your city, your state)?'
My lips gaped slightly, and I figured that was proof enough.
'That face you're making means you believe me now, right?'
Oh my god. They could see me? I quickly covered up my camera with my thumb, and felt my face flush.
'That was a joke. Don't worry, your camera isn't being used right now.'
For a moment, I considered the idea. Did that mean they WERE on my camera, and saw me react, or that they weren't at all, and that really was a joke.
'I don't trust you.'
'You don't have to.'
With that- I was sent a picture.
'Your camera activity receipt.'
I had to think to remember today's date, however soon found that there was nothing scheduled at this time. But all the times past... I can't guarantee that all of those times were times I was using my camera. ... Were those conspiracies of the government using your camera to watch you true?
I typed the question... Then erased it. I don't want to know. So I picked a new question.
'Do you actually wear that mask all the time?'
'Not quite. We keep our lives as Anonymous very separate from our lives as average people. It's more private that way.'
Their answer didn't surprise me. I began thinking up more to ask. I had so many questions!'You are a curious one, aren't you, Y/N?'
