Old City, Sokovia - Earth

1985

When the first and only Sokovian royal child was born to the king and queen, it was clear to the royal doctor as well as the parents that she was special.

They would have thought her special anyways, their little daughter, a princess and future Queen of Sokovia herself - they knew that one day, their country would be left in good hands. But indeed, she was special.

Her mysterious amber-coloured eyes were enough of a signal, let alone the abilities she would develop as she grew older, later in life.

She was gifted, gifted with powers, those that resembled the country's symbol, the firebird, perhaps a coincidence, perhaps fate, a familiar figure from a long tradition of Slavic mythology and folklore.

The young princess was pyrokinetic, with the ability to control, create, put out, and deflect flames. Neither of her parents were gifted as she was, so it was a mystery as to how she had received these special powers. There was speculation of ancient Sokovian rulers being gifted with powers, and so perhaps passed this down to their relatives. But why her, why Princess Kalyna? This question would both equally intrigue and haunt her for the rest of her life.

She would grow strong and confident in her abilities.  However, she was a gifted being born into a world that was very cautious when it came to enhanced beings - a world that would only become more and more cautious as time went on. And so she was forced to keep her powers hidden from the world, even her own country and people, something so much a part of her and yet, she could not share it. This was what was most difficult, the biggest struggle.  And so she became the Firebird as well as Princess Kalyna. One very secret identity, and one very much well known across the world. One figure forced to hide in the shadows, the other always in the world's  spotlight.

From the day she was born, Princess Kalyna of Sokovia was both sides of a complicated coin.

Berlin, Germany - Earth

2016

She couldn't sign, but she had to.

Many countries were signing the Accords, including their friend and ally of Wakanda, and so why wouldn't Sokovia? After all, it was the country's own city, Novi Grad,  which had been destroyed by the Avengers the year previous, the event that had prompted the writing up of the Accords, the world governments finally drawing the line on enhanced beings.

The Sokovia Accords.

The document was even named after her country, for goodness sake. Here, the future of Sokovia - and the world - was outlined. She wasn't even Queen yet.

Prince T'Challa understood her struggle, he being Prince of Wakanda as well as the Black Panther, an enhanced being himself and symbol of his own country. However, the Avengers' actions had caused the deaths of Wakandans, so like with the destruction of Novi Grad, Wakanda had good reason to sign the Accords. He knew how torn she was about it, and was supportive as always.  But  even they would become divided, on opposite sides of a battle, after his father was killed during an unexpected bombing during the signing.

It seemed like her life was always divided, that she was always forced to live two different sides.

But, after her parents' unfortunate sudden deaths, she was now monarch of Sokovia, and so it was her signature that would be going on the document, sealing the fate of enhanced beings like herself within her country. And so she arrived in Vienna along with all the other representatives, ready and willing to sign.

Not really, not fully.  At least somewhat. At least partially.

But she still couldn't sign. At least part of her couldn't. Half of her.

If her parents were still alive and were still the rulers of Sokovia themselves, they would be pushed to sign as well. But they were not here now, and so here she was.

So while Princess Kalyna of Sokovia gave her signature on the Sokovia Accords, the Firebird joined Captain America in the fight against the Accords and their limitations to enhanced beings.

Two sides of a complicated coin, and yet always divided.

(It was a little more difficult writing a chapter on Kalyna, as her story is covered in my Black Panther love story :) But here's a little more backstory for her!

Thank you so much for reading and I hope you enjoyed! :))
