Lailla was an ordinary girl or so she thought, but who could take her wrong she went to school made friends, went to parties and disobeyed curfews. But what was really going to prepare her for this, something unusual happened and her life was headed for a turn.
It was the nineth of August 1995 about 12:05 p.m., and it was blazing hot in Florida. Lailla was sleeping when she was woken up by her mother.
"Wake up sweetheart I got a surprise for you," Lailla turned on her back and tried to break open the crust that shut her eyes and tore open her mouth to greet her mother.
"Mom why did you wake me up its so early" she said as she looked at the dark skinned woman stretching over her with her thick brown curly hair up in one and green eyes that shone like the sun.
"Whew! Said the mother as she covered her nose, "You need to brush your teeth and wash your face and get ready we have somewhere important to go so hurry up", she said opening the blinds to let some light in. Lailla was almost blinded by the bright yellow sunlight striking her half opened eyes. She asked her mom what she was doing because the things that her mom does wasn't what Lailla enjoyed.
"You'll find out soon." said the mother as she winked and walked out the roomed. Lailla still half awake, flung back herself on the soft fluffy bed, covered her face with her pillow and went to sleep.
Time for breakfast her mother shouted and Lailla came rushing down the stairs. During that time the mother had a pleasing smile on her face, she was happy to see her daughter turn into such a beautiful teenager. Then her smile faded when Lailla came closer to her, she remembered the little girl who was in the hospital that could barely breathe. She took a deep breath and forced a smile again as she handed the food to Lailla. After breakfast the ladies went to the airport but Lailla wasn't asking any question actually she was awfully quiet. The mother was worried and thought that Lailla might have found out about the plan she had but pretended to not notice her daughter and tired to avoid her gaze in case there may be any future questions.
"Africa? Africa! We're going to Africa yay!" She screamed in the airport as her black curly hair bounced up and down her head like long springs all being pulled at once; "This is so amazing, can't wait to tell my friends about this" she said as she clapped her hands with excitement.
"No!" said the mother then she took the cell phone away from her daughter, "You must not tell anyone about this...just not yet," she said quietly. Lailla puzzled looked at her mother who was suddenly serious, complied and asked no more questions.
'Now boarding flight 112 to Alumax International Airport.'
"That's us mom lets go", Lailla said eagerly and so they grabbed their stuff and walked towards the plane. At 10:05 .a.m the plane landed and they took a cab to their hotel. Meanwhile Lailla was busy observing the town with amazement while her mother checked the time.
"OMG! It's so beautiful here, I thought Africa was a rundown place and I was coming here to help out but Mom you out smarted me this time because I was afraid I had to do some kind of feed the people work," she said with a sign of relief, "So why are we here?" she looked up questioning with her fingers crossed.
Her mother turned uncomfortably, faced her daughter and said, "You know how I told you your father is dead right".
"Yeah!?" answered Lailla who was not happy talking about her deceased father.
"Well he's not!" she said.
"What?" exclaimed Lailla.
"Yep he's not dead I just told you so, so that you wouldn't feel left out although I know it was hard for you and".
