I twirled the pencil in my fingers. Math class was the most dreadfully boring invention mankind had ever created. Mr.Satty was droning on and on about x and y and whatever. Really, who decided to mix math with english? Oh how I miss the easy elementary school days where we actually used numbers instead of letters in mathmatics. I let out a long sigh. When will this period ever end?
My gaze drifted around the room. I had probably stared at the same cheesy posters on same white walls in this same seat a million times, but it was definitely more interesting than old Mr.Satty's boring lesson. Finally, my eyes rested on the door window. Something moving caught my attention. There was a girl standing out in the hall. She was short and had uncombed brown hair that was pulled up sloppily in a messy bun. Her skin was pale white with blushing pink clouds extended from the apples of her cheeks. Her wide eyes were a interesting gray color. She was wearing nothing special - simply a loose unzipped sweater with a purple T-shirt underneath, yet she was somehow extremely cute. Something about her innocent stature made me want to go up and hug her. I wondered why she was even here. Wasn't she supposed to be in class? Who was this little girl anyway? I averted my gaze, embarrassed to find myself staring. Woah, it almost seems like I'm interested in her. I laughed at how preposterous that was... I mean, we're both girls for God's sake!
"Melisssa Collins!" Mr.Satty shouted. I jumped in my seat a little; I hadn't realized the lesson had ended and that he was already handing back our paper work. I guess I was too preocupied with the mysterious stranger who hovered outside the room. I grabbed my paper and saw the A on top. Eh, I guess expected one... I mean, I really had nothing to do at home but study so that's what I did.
I shifted my eyes upward again to see if she had left yet. Surprisingly, she still stood there - perfectly framed in the little glass window of the classroom door. She seemed to be smiling at something. I glanced toward the direction of her gaze and encountered, but of course, Shane. Math class was wretched, but what made it truly horrifying was the disgusting jerk who sat next to me. The ever popular player known as Shane Mason.
He had a smug grin plastered across his face as he ran his fingers through his blond hair. When he saw I turned my head to face him, he smirked at me. I scowled at him, disgusted by his even appearance and then looked away. Ugh, he's so confident - nothing could burst that bloated ego of his. Each day, he tried to flirt with me and every other female within a 50 foot radius of him. I don't understand why anyone would be interested in him.
"Shane Mason!" Mr.Satty shouted, continuing to return papers. Shane confidently strutted toward Mr.Satty's desk. I watched the girl behind the glass again. Her eyes followed Shane's body. Jeez, why was she looking at him? He's such an idiot and he's not even that attractive. Why doesn't she look here? At me? I'm here too, you know? Oh my god, I sound jealous. No. Melissa, what are you even doing?
Suddenly, she burst out laughing. There was no sound, but I could tell with the sight of her mouth wide open with the corners of her lips stretched upwards. She tried to hide her laughter by covering up her smile with her hand, but it was obvious she was happy about something. I snorted at the strange face she was making and the way her cheeks were turning redder by the minute. I wonder why she was laughing... I started to want to hear what her laugh would sound like. Would it be quiet and timid like her cute appearance? Or would her laughter fill the room? Either way, I had an odd urge hear this unknown sound...
Then, strangely, she abruptly closed her mouth. That pretty pink color drained from her cheeks. She looked scared. Almost like a small mouse about to be caught in the predator's clutches. The bell rang and she scurried away; some stray strands of her brown hair trailing behind her.
I stood up quickly to try to follow her, but my path was blocked by Shane Mason pushing past me angrily yelling some one's name. When I finally pushed my way out into the hall, the commotion of students and teachers had already enveloped her. Damn it. Where had she gone? I scanned the area for her brown hair, but to no avail. Defeated, I went to my next period class and sat down.
But for the rest of the school day, I could not get her image out of my head. Who was she? What was she doing? Why was she laughing? How come she ran away? The more and more I thought about her, the more and more I wanted to know. Why was I so obsessed with this one girl?
The moment I got home, I pulled out last year's yearbook and thumbed through. Flipping past pages and pages of fake smiles and hairsprayed hair, I finally found her in the junior section. She smiled up awkwardly at me from the picture. My fingers glided over the glossy paper and hovered next to her name.
"Julie Ann Jones," I said out loud to myself. It was such a lovely name. It seemed so perfect for her. A warm feeling spread over me. I shut the book and lay down on my bed. A smile tugged at the corner of my cheeks.
"Just who are you, Julie Ann Jones?" I asked the world, "Who are you?"
