Silence. I chewed my broccoli slowly. Head down, I stared at my food. I picked up my knife and fork and cut a piece of pork from the plate in front of me. The screeching noise of the metal scraping the dish echoed throughout the kitchen. Every mudane sound seemed amplified by the air awkward between my mother and I.
Ahem. The sudden break in the quiet startled me. I looked up toward the direction of the sound.
" So Melissa... How was school today?" she asked tentively.
I finished swallowing before answering with a lukewarm, "It was okay."
"Mmhm..." she nodded as if taking in a lot information. After a long pause she continued with an "Are you still doing well in all your classes?"
"Uh huh" I responded, cutting another piece of meat away. The scraping noise bouncing off the uncomfortable thickness between.
"Oh, well, that's good." She took a sip of water. "How are all your friends doing?"
Don't have any. Well maybe Julie... but I'm not even sure of that. Why couldn't mom have could home at bit later so I could have heard Julie's message? "They're fine, mom." With that sentence, I finished my meal and gathered up my dishes. My mom watched me as I left the table to place the dirty plate and silverware into the dishwasher.
"I'm going to go study now."
"Okay, dear."
I left her alone and returned upstairs to my room. Immediately, I grabbed my cell phone, unlocked it, and called the voice mail service.
"You have two unheard message," the familiar female robot responded, "First unheard message:"
"Hello Melissa, it is your mother. I will be home early tonight and I'm bringing back dinner so you don't have to make your own today. See you later. Bye."
"End of first unheard message. Second unheard message:" The emotionless voice continued.
"Heyyy Melissa, it's Julie. Ummmmmm..." Oh my goodness, it's her voice. Internal squeals and emotions flooded my senses. She just sounds so cute! "Come on Jules, just ask her already!" Woah wait, who was that? It was a deep voice that sounded somewhat familiar, and it was followed by a harsh and slightly muffled, "Shut up! I'm getting to it!" by Julie. Then much clearer, "Yeahhh, so like, I asked you ealier today if you could like, um, tutor me... in math... cause like I'm doing realllyyyyy poorly and I was wondering when we could maybe meet and do that. So like, I have a test this Friday and I wanted to meet soon... so if its okay with you, could we meet tomorrow? Um, thanks! I'll talk to you later then.... Byeeeeee~!" Click.
"End of second unheard mess-" I pressed the end-call button and set my phone down onto my bed. She wants to meet. She wants to meet me. I fell backwards onto my bed and stared up at the cieling. Thoughts racing around my head. Tomorrow. I'm not doing anything right? I mean, I never do anything... Okay. She needs PreCalc help. Maybe I should study up on some PreCalc. I don't want her to think I'm stupid or anything. Oh, what do I wear? Should I go fancy? Technically I'm her teacher... sort of? She I wear teacher-like clothing? No, no, no. I'll look too stuffy. What about my hair? And where are we meeting? Is she coming over here? Oh no! My bedroom's a mess. Maybe I should clean it. But wait, no, what if I'm going to her house. How should I act? What if her parents are there! Wait, what time are we meeting? Actually... yeah... what time are we meeting? I sat up suddenly, jolted from my frantic mind.
I need to return her call.
Oh goodness, what do I do? I have to call her. I have to respond to her message. Can I even do that? I'm nervous already from just hearing her voice on voice mail. Stop being a wimp, Melissa, it's just a phone call. My inner me berating my lack of bravery. I sighed. It's just a phone call. Just a phone call. Just a phone call. Repeating my new mantra over and over in my head, I grabbed my cell off my bed. I quickly entered my passcode into the phone, before I could lose my newfound confidence, and then searched through my short list of contacts for her name.
I slowly took a deep breath before tapping the name, "Julie Anne Jones."

Welp, that was super short... but, I just wanted to get this out there to encourage myself to write something during the summer months.
