I feel as if I've walked for hours when the sun finally makes its appearance. All the glowing plants recoil into themselves when the first light strikes the ground and the air around me grows almost misty.
"Where can he be?" I ask to no one in particular. I am sure I've walked to the heart of Neverland, though of course anyone knows that's not possible for Neverland is bigger than it looks from above.
"Girl!"
"It's a girl!"
"Look at her dress! How silly is that!"
Voices echo around me. Young, juvenile voices, accompanied by those almost deepened like they're a little older than the others. The branches above me rattle, shaking loose bright green leaves.
"Who is there?" I demand, looking above my head feeling quite frightened.
"We are." A small boy pokes his head out of fox hole beneath a tree trunk. "Pan sent us to tell you you're going the wrong way!"
I dart towards him, hoping for more information but he disappears back where he came.
"The wrong way..." I mutter, feeling extremely hopeless. I turn on my heels to head the opposite direction and just as my feet begin carrying me forward, an older boy leaps from the branches above, crossing his arms over his chest.
"Why so extreme?" He taunts. "Couldn't you have taken a right or a left?"
My eyes narrow and I lean forward, grabbing the strap to a brown pack he wears. "Don't be such a weasel!" I demand. "He took my from my warm home convincing me this would all be wonderful and then I'm informed that I have to make a great pilgrimage in who knows what direction and just hope I stumble across your camp?" I narrow my eyes, staring severely at him.
His eyes dance as if he has something in store for me. "Don't make me call Pan and tell him you're complaining."
I let go of him and brush past. "Go on, boy. Leave me be."
"No more hints it is!"
And with that he darts off into the trees.
I scoff and let my arms fall helplessly to my side. "I didn't way I didn't want hints." I groan.
