The only good thing about summer in the valley is the fair. Yes, it is hotter than hell. And yes, I do go home with my own impersonation of a tomato. But, it's what I look forward to every year.

Most people go for the food, or to ride the rides, some even go because it is better than sitting at home in the middle of July. But me, I have to go.

You see, my parents run a funnel cake stand every year. And they make all five of us take one, two hour shift a day. Every year I take the morning shift. That means I set the booth up, then work for about an hour and a half. After our shift is over we get the rest of the day to ourselves.

The morning shift is the best. It is the coolest part of the day and you do very little work. During my whole shift, I probably only make about three cakes at most. I mean, who wants a funnel cake at nine in the morning? Most of the time, I spend my whole shift people watching.

I watch the kids drag their parents to the rides. I watch the teens do nothing because they think that is what is 'cool'. I watch the rednecks get more and more drunk by the minute, the adults stuff their faces, and people spending fortunes on things they can buy anywhere else for 3 bucks.

This is what the fair is all about. Every year is the exact same as the last. Nothing out of the ordinary ever happens. Except for this year.
