Chapter one
Matthew crawled out of bed, slipped on his glasses, slipped a red hoodie over his body, and headed to the kitchen. He turned on the sink and got a cup of water and downed a few painkillers. Matthew had a splitting migraine, an he could tell it would only get worse. He began making breakfast for himself and the small polar bear he lived with. He sighed softly as thudding at his front door began. He sighed softly, knowing it was only America. None of the other countries ever visited him. "It's open," Matthew yelled rolling his eyes. The door swung open, and Matthew turned around. Before him stood a silver haired nation. He looked at his feet as if admitting defeat.
"Gilbert. Why are you here."
"I was wondering...." Gilbert's voice trailed off.
"Why are you here," Canada demanded.
"Germany kicked me out and none of the other nations like me so...."
"You can stay," Canada interrupted, "just for a little while though. Until you get back on your feet."
Gilbert gave a grateful smirk and picked up his suitcase he had brought with him. "Where should I put this?" Gilbert asked.
"Upstairs, first door on the left. That's where you'll stay."
Gilbert headed up the carpeted stairs. He walked into the small room and put his bag on the ground. He flopped into the bed and buried his head into one of the pillows. A small chirp came from his suitcase, followed by a slow zipping noise. Gilbert glanced over and saw the little yellow bird he loved ever so much. "I could have stayed at any nation's house Gilbird....why did I chose here? Is it because he's nice? I mean I could have stayed with America...or France...or Spain....yet I came here...." Gilbert spike softly to his little yellow friend. "I mean maybe I feel bad for him....is that it? Pity? Or is it turning to something more.......maybe feelings. No...I doubt that...just pity..."
Canada rested his head against the door and listened to the one sided conversation. He sighed softly. 'I knew it was too good to be true. He just pities me...' Matthew though to himself. He opened the door and threw the plate of pancakes at Gilbert. Gilbert stared in shock for a moment before looking away. "I understand," Matthew said before turning around.
"Matt...I'm sor-"
"No you really aren't. You really truly aren't. Gilbert I was considering taking you back...but you just pity me, so why should I care?"
"Please," Gilbert said running after Matt, "give me a second chance."
"Second chance? Are you joking? This is more than a second chance. I've given you so many chances and you blew all of them. You can stay for tonight but I want you out before sunrise."
That night, Canada barely slept. He wondered if he was too cold to Gilbert. 'He was colder to me when we were together...' Matthew thought to himself. He sat up in bed, he rested his head against the wall and waited. At about 5 in the morning, he heard the front door slam. It was Gilbert leaving. Matthew sighed softly and tucked himself back into his bed. He let tears slip from his eyes and he slowly drifted to sleep. Matthew slept until about 7, that's when he received a call from his brother, America.
"Hey dude! Did you forget about the meeting today?" America practically screamed into the phone.
"Oh...uh yeah I forgot...it's in my country right?" Canada said sitting up.
"Yeah dude! Wanna meet up for breakfast?"
"No thanks, I'll see you in a bit..." Matthew whispered before hanging up.
He once again forced himself from the warmth of his blankets. He put on a dress shirt, dress pants, black shoes, and his glasses. He combed his hair and headed out the door with Kumajiru. He got in his car and headed to the meeting hall. All of the nations were waiting on him. The only time they noticed him was when the meeting was in his country. He walked into the room, and was greeted by all of the nations, all except Prussia. Though he was no longer a nation, he would always go to the meetings with Canada, but that would no longer happen. Canada sat down in the only empty seat and listened as Germany yelled at everyone.
Russia smiled slightly at Canada and patted his back, which terrified the smaller nation. The two had rarely talked. Canada was honestly scared by Russia, though most nations were. Russia whispered softly "I heard about what happened between you and Prussia. I know what you're going through. Yao and I broke up a while ago...so I know how you feel..."
"Really?" Canada asked. "You guys seemed perfect together," he sighed softly.
"He broke us off. Now he's happier which is okay with me. I know we don't talk much but if you ever need a friend I'm here..." Russia said looking away from Canada.
