Mommy straightens out 5 year old Jacob's shirt and cap. It's his first day of kindergarten, and the bubbles are already festering in his stomach.
"Now I want you to take care of yourself today Jacob." She kneels to kiss him on the forehead. "Anything bad happens? You tell mama and she'll come beat the bad man up."
She rests her hand on Jacob's shoulders then stands to inspect the room of flourishing children before them. She wants a bright future for Jacob.
She turns to the teacher near the door and says her words before leaving. Jacob joins the jumbled children.
"Hello?" He inquires.
A taller, older white boy with scruff blonde hair goes "Hmph. And who are you?
"I'm Jacob, my mama just move' in around here."
"Well my dad don't like your kind around here. Beat it."
Jacob stammers back.
"Do you have ears? I said BEAT IT!"
He shoves Jacob to the floor. The teacher is no where in the room.
Jacob yells out for "HELP!"
The class watches on. They feed off the entertainment that Billy provides them, he is their champion; clearly destined for athletic and academic success.
Billy approaches. His fists clench.
"Wait! Wait! No. Mama! Come help me!!"
The cries from Jacob are heart-pinching. The childrens cold eyes laugh at him.
Mom sweeps him off the floor in a blaze of heroism. Saving him from the shark-pool of children. He clings to her chest.
With a horrified look she rushes out of the classroom. She shuts him in the car and drives.
