seenerI laugh, looking at Alice's messages. She was my dorm mate all throughout the years I've studied at NY University — she's like the Byul of America. We both made a promise to ourselves that after graduating, we'd both go to South Korea, but apparently she has to spend the summer at her parents' in return.
I made a mental note to reply to both of their messages as soon as I landed because if not they, for sure, will send out cops to find me. It's now ten o'clock at night in Korea, meaning I have about two hours before the airplane lands. I decided to just listen to some music and try to sleep.
I'm so excited to go home.
I walked out of the airport, breathing in the smell of salt water and fish, the familiar scent making me regret going to New York for a bit. I used to be really homesick for a few years living in America until I finally adjusted to it, and just when I did, I left.
I hailed a taxi and as I entered, the driver looked conflicted. He was muttering under his breath— something along the lines of, "don't know how to speak English...." I laughed and asked, in Korean, "Sir, can you take me to this address?" He looked at me shocked, and nodded quickly, blushing a bit. He probably didn't expect me to speak fluently in Korean. I mean, even though I was born and raised here, I looked more of a foreigner than a Korean.
I plugged my earphones in and stared blankly out the window. My eyes caught the sight of the ocean. The waves were softly lapping onto the shore, calm and yet so dangerous. The moonlight reflecting on the water, the wind blowing from side to side, as if it was rocking the trees to sleep.
As a child, I've always been attracted to the ocean— not just because I lived right next to it, but because there was always something about it that intrigued me. It was like, there was something calling me to go to the ocean, to explore, to dive deeply into it to discover its deepest, darkest secrets.
But I never did.
I never got a chance to do that.
My mother hated the thought of me going into the deeper part of the ocean. She told me it was dangerous, and that she was worried about me. But I just thought she was being too paranoid about the ocean. She literally never let me swim on the five-foot mark, she always said to stay above five feet.
"Excuse me, miss. We're here already," the taxi driver said. I began to turn red from embarrassment, I didn't realize that we'd arrived at my house. I smiled at the driver and gave him 5,000 won. Yes, it was a lot but it was very late at night, he looked tired and I had money to spare. He looked at me surprised but I just laughed and gave it to him before walking to my doorstep.
I stood alone in my house, everything was the same. And yet, it was not.
All of the furniture had plastic covers over them, you could see the accumulation of dust on the floor, shelves and in the air. I pursed my lips, tied my hair up into a bun and started cleaning the place up. I just wanted to get the cleaning part over, I wouldn't be able to sleep anyways since I was jet lagged.
I cleaned every nook and cranny, tested if the appliances that I left were still working, took notes of what I was going to buy in the department shop the next morning, dusted everything off and finally, I entered my mother's room.
I started to tear up. All of her belongings were put inside boxes, the furniture that was in her room was also covered in plastic. I wiped the tears away and started to clean her room. I did the same process to her room— dusted off the shelves, vacuumed and mopped the floor, check if the appliances were working, and took notes of what I should buy the next day. I really wanted to fix the whole house, we had a nice house but honestly, the color of our house was a bit outdated, the furniture was all over the place and this just wasn't my style.
Well, what would you expect. I literally major in architecture.
I texted my friend, who also majored in architecture, to come over the next day and help me get all the things I need from the stores I was going to and to get his opinions on what I wanted to do with my house. He replied with an thumbs-up emoji and I was like,
heejin
why are u even awake its like
2 AMdumb ass
why are YOU awake at 2 am ???
and
i was playing overwatchheejin
i knew it 🤦🏻I went to my room, that I had already cleaned earlier, and layed down on the bed. The bed was still the softest bed I have ever slept on. My mother made sure my family was comfortable with everything, she bought the nicest bed, the softest clothing, and even bought all of our rooms an air conditioning. She wanted us and the guests, if there were, to be comfortable in every way possible.
I buried my head into my pillow, and smiled as I remembered all of the memories I had in this place. At a certain point of me reminiscing my memories, I wept. I cried like a freaking baby, until I fell asleep.
It really was my fault.
