We enter Joe Ballroom C and the lighting is dim. This ballroom is wall to wall with pastel polo shirt, guys wearing short shorts and Sperry's. The ladies all have on either white shorts and black shirts or black shorts and grey shirt. All of their hair is curled and their make-up looks as if they just gotten out of a MAC beauty demo. Normally, I probably wear as much make-up as they do, but I’m still very intimidated and nervous to be in here; hopefully I look presentable. Danielle starts to nod her head along to the music that seems to be blaring from a DJ speaker at the other end of the ballroom. Sophia has diverged in a conversation with some skinny bottle blonde, whose skin is more orange than an oompa loompa, and her teeth are as bleached as my white ass. This is the shit I’m talking about. I really cannot comprehend how some people can make themselves extremely fake; like their personalities are one thing but fake nails, fake hair, fake tan, fake colored eye contacts, fake colored hair; I mean really it’s ridiculous to have half your physical self be fake, and probably most of your personality too. Dan, Soph and I have all heard the stereo types of the sororities, there are only 4 on this campus and Greek life has a huge impact of the school. The girl Taylor is talking to is wearing three sigmas. To let me know that they are loud, fun, outgoing, mostly nursing majors (who then later change to community health science) and never, I mean NEVER sleep. I stand behind Sophia and of course I can hear the Barbie doll blonde’s name Jenna Mae; great she even has a cliché southern name too! I leave before she sees my face of disapproval. The tri-sigma are said to be the best on campus, the guys always want to hang with them and another sorority Chi Kappa. I make my way to their poster board and it’s drenched in pink and pearls and ribbon and sequins and purple sweatshirts, pink sweatshirts, pretty much their display looks like Barbie’s walk in closet.
The girls here don’t greet me with a warm welcome, and that’s irritating. They don’t even acknowledge me really. I am irritated with them, and then I get a whisper in my ear.
“This is the one I want” Danielle says. My head swivels around and stares at her.
“What?” I respond a little too loudly and draw the ChiKap’s attention.
“Hey there, I’m Cindy what are your names?” This tiny brunette with ice blue eyes greets us.
“Hi I’m Danielle are you in Chi Kappa?” She responds slightly stepping in front of me to angle me off. Honestly, I don’t mind being exited from the fake conversation that’s about to occur. But I’m more confused as to why she would want this sorority; from the outside it looks nothing like her; I mean glitter? Pink? Danielle is a tomboy with an interesting style I don’t see her here; but I guess she knows better. I make my way to the back two tables; which are the known for being “the worst” and “the weird”; while the other two are known as “the win”. I go over and am greeted by a shorter chunkier girl at the Delta Alpha table, she is sweet offers to know my name, and as far as I can tell she doesn’t have any fake or false physical appearance. She tells me a little bit about her sorority and I genuinely like talking to her, she is flowing and easy and I feel relaxed and confident around these girls. I then move myself to “the weird” table which is in the back corner. The poster board is covered in black and gold lettering and everything is put nicely on stationary. They seem organized, they have their letters out which read K A O. Which is Kappa Alpha Omicron, they stand for faith, trust and love. They have picture frames, collages, diamond shaped wooden things painted and I meet a blonde pretty-tall girl named Julia.
