It can be difficult, even impossible, to determine whether a given Old Indian Dowry Chest was in fact intended to serve for a dowry or whether it was commissioned for some other purpose. However, it is probable that the most richly decorated pieces were marriage chests, particularly those decorated with good luck symbols and signs of red paint - the color of celebration, fertility and blood. Large chests for dowries and other uses of course also existed, but relatively few have survived.
