The Following Day...

I leaned back on Kory's Dodge Challenger taking a fat pull from the blunt. We were waiting for Hassan, a low-level worker of ours to come through.

Kory had set a meeting with him in north Xanbia. I was constantly observing and absorbing my surroundings because this wasn't my hood. Soon Hassan came around the corner with a cigarette in his mouth as usual.

Hassan stepped on what little was left of his cigarette before approaching us. "Wassup," He greeted.

Kory handled the less serious issues in our business. Mainly because I didn't have the patience for bullshit. Kory handled disputes and made sure everybody got what they worked for. I made the more major moves for us. Make no mistake though, I wouldn't have been able to do any of this shit without him.

Kory handed Hassan a picture, a folded piece of paper, and told him to make sure that man doesn't see next week. Hassan nodded eagerly stuffing both into his pocket, he was anxious to move up the chain.

"C'mon nigga" I said putting out the blunt I was smoking. Something ain't feel right.

Kory nodded. "Ard young, I'll hit you." He dapped Hassan up before joining me in the Challenger.

Kory chuckled as he drove off. "You know you paranoid nigga."

"I'd rather be paranoid than dead," I responded honestly. I don't give a fuck what anybody says, if something doesn't feel right then it ain't right.

It was around five o'clock when we got back to our side of Xanbia. I looked up from my phone and turned the radio down. "Drop me at my mom's."

Kory gave a nod in response and turned the radio back up. My moms and I had a complex relationship. We got into it so bad one day I had to leave the house. Our relationship still healing from that to this day but I love her with everything in me.

People usually speak of this feeling of being home when they pull up in their childhood neighborhood. I just felt apprehensive. I know how quick shit can go left.

"I catch you tomorrow," I said to Kory before closing the car door.

I could hear Say My Name by Destiny's Child playing from the yard. Meaning my mama was on another one of her cooking binges. I knocked on the screen door and stepped back. My niece Aerin answered the door.
