"But what about children? Don't you want children at all? You've got your mother's captivating beauty Lilah. Tons of men have in the past, come to offer for you, rich ones. Affluent ones. But you've refused every single one of them.
When you're seventy five years old, can you still honestly tell me then, that you would have no regrets? When you're alone? When you have no child to love you, and call you mother? Can you honestly tell me that?" Mrs Jameson cried
Delilah steeled her features, swallowing "Well, it's like you said. Healers don't live that long, to start with. And I'm one of the weakest healers the world has ever seen, seeing that I'm human. Even if I do reach that age without a child, who says I'll be alone? Look at you. You have no children, except your grandson. Your only daughter died, while giving birth to him. And yet you're never alone. You have me, and I love you more than any child ever could, Aunt Jamie. You've been a mother to me in more ways than one. So you're never alone. Who says I will be then? That path just isn't for me. Love. Family. Affection. But I will take all your words to heart. I will take necessary precautions. I won't heal people recklessly. I'm going to take good care of myself. I'm the last living relative of the house of Salvador. I can't just die so easily. I still don't know if my sister's still alive" Delilah sniffed, Mrs Jameson simply sighed, grief enveloping her.
"I'm sure you know you can't go back home?" Mrs Jameson said after a while
Delilah deftly lifted her head from Aunt Jamie's shoulders. "What?"
"You're no longer welcome in the Salvador household my love"
"Whatever do you mean by that, Aunt Jamie? That's my family home. That's my... Inheritance! It's mine" Delilah resounded furiosly
"The law doesn't see it that way, and you know it. Last night, Gregor Smitten tried to get under your skirts. What do you think he's going to do this time around? You don't need a blind man to see that Gregor lusts after you, and means to have you. And soon. Especially now that he has those special marriage licenses in his hands. Don't think he was joking when he said that. He's going to take you to any random altar, whether you consent or not, kicking or screaming. He's going to marry you to him next week, and finally get what he's wanted all along. You. You are a lady, Miss Salvador, and by God you were raised as one. It's your duty to remain chaste and pure, without the likes of Gregor Smitten trying to taint you."
"I have no where to go. No money. If I leave, where will I go to?" Delilah was at a loss for words
"That's the question you should have asked all along. It was as if your mother knew this day would come. And she'd been saving for it. There's a box your mother kept before she died, and I brought it along with me here, it contains the deeds of an undeclared townhouse in the city, that is solely in your name. She knew the main house would be given as Genevieve's diary, and in case the man she married decided to drive you out, she didn't want to leave you stranded. Even her husband did not know about this property. I've been there myself. I'll admit it's not as big as the Salvador's house, but I'll wager you'd be immensely comfortable there. There are servants there, and chickens, livestock, a garden, horses to tend to, I remember you used to ride when you were much younger. You're so going to love it. Plus it's in the heart of the city, you have better chance of finding out who harmed your sister, than you would out here on the outskirts of town. You'd be right under the Queen's nose over there in the city, and so I'd implore you to be extremely careful. Queen Catherine has always been vicious. You must keep your healing gift a secret. Trust no one. For if she found out that after two decades, a healer has finally been born to the gypsies, she will seek to kill you instantly. It won't matter to her that you're partly human, only that you're partly gypsy as well, and that you do in fact have the ability to bring back powerful gypsies she's previously killed back to life. So hide your gifts as much as you can. Hide your tattoos. How many of them do you have now?"
"Five" Delilah murmured, staring transfixed into Aunt Jamie's expressive eyes
"Where are they located?"
"My birth tattoo on my left hip, another on my right hip, two on both my lower butt cheeks, and one on my right inner thigh." Delilah blushed slightly, because of her intimate the conversation had turned
"Thank heavens healer's tattoos hide themselves. They certainly picked the right place to hide. And if you never marry, no man would ever see them. Another reason why you have to be chaste. You also need to stop bringing too many near-death experiences back to life Lilah, your tattoos are increasing. From one to five? For every three near death experience you heal, a brand new tattoo appears on you. Heal people but not those almost dying. The experience alone is enough to brand new tattoos and we can't have that, you absolutely cannot be found out."
"They're not large tattoos Aunt Jamie. They're small ones. Healer's tattoos especially on a human, are not large, as compared to murder tattoos on the back of gypsies who have killed people before. One of my tattoos is a butterfly" Delilah smiled, confidingly
"Nevertheless, we can't have you healing too much near death experiences. It's brands you, and is not good for your health. Like Mrs Thompskin and her child. They were too near to death"
"As always Aunt Jamie, you're right. I will try my very possible best."
"It's not only the deeds to the house that's in the box your mother set aside. There's little money as well, and the receipts you're to take to a bank, to cash out the remaining sum of money, and it's a fairly huge sum. Fifty thousand pounds, I think. That sum could last a lady, especially one like you, for a really long time. You could invest, buy new gowns, start a whole brand new life from scratch. Heck you could even buy a title. How does Count Salvador sound?"
"Oh my! Aunt Jamie stop!" Delilah burst out laughing
