CHAPTER ONE

October walked through the hallway, her head down. It was going to be her first official day at school the next day and so far she wasn't enjoying it. She hated everything about school and worst of all she was switching schools. She wondered how she was going to cope as a new student. It was already hard enough.

She would've preferred getting a job and assisting her mother and sister Jane, but sadly her mother had forbidden her from quitting school, and worst of all, her mother had also demanded she stopped working and concentrate on school.

She was currently on her way out of school; she had just finished with the principal. She had been told it was mandatory since she was a scholarship student. Another reason she had to work hard. She knew her mother was never going to be able to afford the tuition without working her ass off.  All she wanted was to make her mother happy and proud.

She wanted to be a daughter her mother was proud of once again, not a burden that stressed her mother's life.

Walking out of the school building she looked around her eyes stopping at the parking lot. She looked at the cars from where she stood, silently praying that the cars parked Belonged to the teachers because the last thing she needed was to be stuck with a bunch of egotistical jerks who cared about nothing but how rich they were.

She walked home knowing her prayers wouldn't be answered. she knew deep down who the cars belonged to. She didn't expect less though; it was truly a school for rich kids.

She silently decided not to cause any trouble, she was going to lay low and that involved no boys too. Her ex-boyfriend had made her understand how problematic relationships could get. She also thanked God Inwardly that everyone wore uniforms at least she could blend In easily.

It wasn't easy being a mother but for Augusta Young, it was harder. She was a single mother who had been jobless until recently. As recent as an hour ago. She had worked many odd jobs to make ends meet and she wasn't ashamed of it.

She was ashamed of the fact that her elder daughter October had had to work to support the family, she was even more ashamed of how scared she had been when she had asked her to quit her job and focus on school. She had been scared of losing the little support October provided from her part-time jobs.

All her fears had been replaced with joy because the pay from her new job was really good. She didn't even have to get a side job.
She had gotten a job as a driver to a businessman.

Lana, her best friend had pressured her to apply and she wasn't regretting her decision, even though she had only applied to please Lana. She made a mental note to buy Lana a gift and maybe a girl's day out too from her first paycheck. Its only con was that she had to be at work by 6:00 am every day.

She consoled herself with the idea of spending time at home on Saturdays and Sundays since she had the day off, her former jobs didn't spare her weekends.

"Hey Mom - Jane her younger daughter greeted as she entered the house, looking as exhausted as usual.

"How was school? - She asked smiling contagiously.

Although Augusta loved both her daughters exceptionally, she had a special place for Jane in her heart because she reminded her of herself when she was younger and it didn't help that Jane was looked just like her.

"Did something good happen? - Jane stared at her mother suspiciously.
It had been months since her mother smiled like that.

"I got a job today, as a driver and the pay is good - Augusta was only a high school graduate.

She hadn't gone to college so she couldn't bag a white-collar job.

"I can finally take care of my girls - Augusta added teary-eyed.

"Congrats mom. I'm happy too - she replied hugging her mother.

She couldn't wait for October to return so she could tell her.

October had been hesitant to quit and focus on school but now she could do that without feeling too guilty. At least the number of things she felt guilty for would reduce.
