Cars speeding down the streets of Los Angeles...

Rain pouring down from the sky...

Most people would hate this sudden downpour.

I am one of those people.

Now, my reasoning may not be like that of most people though. Actually, I really do like the rain, but sudden downpours like this remind me of my childhood. I left Seoul when I was 14 to live with my uncle in Los Angeles. Why? Well... that's a story for another time.

Blinded by the raindrops caught on my glasses, I can barely make out the light signaling for me to start crossing the street. I tighten my grip on my canvas bag and start to cross the street. I hear someone, a male voice, yelling "STOP! STOP!" I look up and see a man running toward me. He reaches out as if to grab my hand and—

SCREECH———!!!

Black... everything is black... and then the pain hits.

Such excruciating pain in every part of my body. The scent of antiseptics fills my nose and I can faintly hear the sound of a heart monitor beeping over and over again.

Hospital... I must be in a hospital.

It takes every bit of energy I have left for me to open my eyes. The hospital room door flies open as my uncle runs into the room. He notices I'm awake and quickly wipes the tears off his face.

"Y/n! Oh my gosh y/n!"

He sits in the chair next to me and grabs my hand. That's when I notice the bruises and scrapes on my arms.

"Y/n," he says while fighting back tears, "I'm so sorry. I should have gone to the store instead of you! Ahh-" His head falls onto the bed in despair.

"Uncle, I'm ok..."

He looks up at me as if I'm crazy. "No, you're not! You're not ok!"

"Well, I will be." ...I think...

Soon a doctor and nurse come into the room to check on me.

"Miss y/n," the doctor says as he reads the information on what I can assume is my medical chart. "We have given you some pain medication that should help with cuts and bruises. Luckily none of your bones were broken in the crash... Sadly, I can't say the same for your friend over here."

That's when I notice the person lying in the bed next to mine. The bandage on his head makes it hard to see his face, but I can tell that it's the same guy who had been running toward me before everything went black.

"Friend? Y/n, do you know him?" my uncle asks.

"No... I've never met him before." ...Right?...

The doctor looks at him with sadness in his eyes. "If it weren't for him you probably wouldn't have survived the crash. He hit his head pretty hard as he took most of the impact so we'll have to monitor his condition for a while"

Why would he do that?

We don't even know each other...

How badly is he hurt?

Could he die?!?!

Too many thoughts flood my brain so I look away from the bandaged boy and close my eyes.

"Try to get some sleep. I'll be here the whole time," I hear my uncle say as I drift away.

A dream.... I wish this whole thing was a dream.

———————————————————

It's been a few days since the accident. Most of my cuts have started to heal and the bruises are slowly going away. It took a lot of effort on my part to convince my uncle that I'm fine and that he should go back to his store.

My uncle owns a bookstore in Koreatown. I've helped him run it ever since I moved here, but of course I was busy studying and surviving high school. It's been a few years since I've graduated so most of my time is spent working in the store now. Actually, I was on my way to the store when the accident happened.

My bandaged roommate hasn't woken up yet. It feels weird to admit but I've been really worried about him. Maybe it's because he got hurt trying to help me...

All of a sudden the beeping of his heart monitor starts getting faster and faster and his whole body starts to convulse! With shaky hands, I press the button for the nurse to come. Soon multiple nurses run into the room and start working on him. Whatever they're saying is too medically advanced for me to understand. I feel helpless as all I can do is sit in my bed and watch. They call a few doctors into the room to work on him and soon his heart rate goes to normal and his body stops convulsing.

The room becomes very quiet and I subconsciously hold my breath in anticipation of what will happen next...
