Lucy stares after Lauren as she walks away. On the outside, she looks blank. The betrayal and anger begins to bounce around her head, though her brain is currently incapable of processing those feelings. She feels numb.
It feels a little too familiar for Lucy's liking...
-
"This isn't all of it," Lucy looks into the briefcase, then up at the disheveled, snotty man who slid it over to her. A few feet behind her stands her girlfriend, Nicole, anxiously looking between Lucy, the briefcase, and their client. "Where's the rest?"
"You'll get the rest as soon as I get a meeting with your girlfriend's father," He pulls a gun from his coat, aiming it directly at Lucy, "I don't want the drugs, ladies. You can take that and the rest and leave if you just tell me where he is."
"What do you want with him?" Lucy hears Nicole say, though she is far too focused on the gun aimed at her head to think clearly.
"He killed my daughter," The man spits.
"My father doesn't like to meet with clients. That's why we do it for him," Nicole says, sounding irritated. Lucy feels her heart quicken.
"Don't you think he'll make an exception?" Lucy says, trying to keep the panic out of her voice. She's never had a gun aimed at her head for quite this long before. And never has someone aiming a gun at her had such a crazed, vengeful look in their eyes.
Nicole doesn't say anything. Lucy can tell it agitates the client. "Do you want me to shoot your girlfriend, little girl?" He nearly shouts, his voice echoing in the alley. Lucy flinches. She's glad Nicole can't see her face.
"Nicole, please. Call your father," Lucy says slowly. Every fiber of her being says Nicole will do it. She'll choose her. They have plans to run away together, after all. And soon, at that. It's all Nicole talks about, and it's all that's kept Lucy from putting a bullet between Nicole's father's eyes herself.
She's tired of this. She's tired of dealing with sleazy men and addicts and criminals. The only reason she joined was because of Nicole, and the only reason she's stayed so long... is because of Nicole.
She loves her more than anything.
"I don't care what you do with her," Nicole says.
Lucy swears in that moment, time stops moving.
What?
The man genuinely looks taken aback for a moment as he looks at Nicole, then at Lucy. Quite frankly, he looks just as confused as Lucy feels. She's sure she just imagined Nicole saying that, and that any minute she'll hear Nicole speaking with her father on the phone. But that moment never comes.
"Sorry, baby. Better you than me."
Then she hears footsteps. Running on pavement. Getting distant.
The client panics and shoots her anyway before taking off.
As Lucy bleeds out on the pavement, cold and in terrible pain, she somehow convinces herself that she's about to wake up from a horrid dream any moment...
-
She does wake up, but it was never a dream.
When she wakes she's in a hospital bed. She has a roommate, whose side of the room is coated in balloons, treats and get-well-soon cards. Her own side of the room is empty.
A doctor comes by and explains what happens, but she remembers everything quite well. He says that the police will be by to talk with her soon and take a statement.
