Vanessa's P.O.V
Never in my life have I ever woken up before my alarm went off. Rolling over to look at my clock, I see that it's 8 in the morning. I let out a breath smiling to myself. I felt relaxed and almost as if a wave relief has come over me. I finally can start fresh and it is almost like I have nothing to worry about. Emma was nice enough and had bought me a t.v. for my room. I decide to put on some Netflix before I get up and start getting ready for the day. It is a big day after all, it's my first day of work. After my episode finishes, I get out of bed and head to the bathroom to shower and get dressed.
Turning my music on quietly, I head to the kitchen to cook breakfast. I have no idea if Emma is up or not. I couldn't tell you if she was an early riser or not, given the last time we were in the same timezone, we thought 11 pm was late. Nothing like feeling rebellious than when you saw George Lopez would come on the TV.
Deciding to be a good roommate I make a plate for Emma as well. As I eat I scroll through texts that I missed yesterday. My Dad and I are very close so being this far away and in a different timezone will be hard for me. I send him a good morning text before getting up to put my dishes away.
"Morning." I hear a groggy voice behind me. I turn to see Emma looking half asleep.
"Morning sunshine. I made you some breakfast. You can put it in the microwave if it's too cold for you." I tell her while finishing washing the pan.
Emma's face creates the biggest smile instantly waking her up.
"Waking up to breakfast made for me? I should've forced you to come and be my roommate so much sooner! You might have just dug yourself a hole Sa. I will be expecting this often!"
Emma jokes walking over to the microwave. "Are you excited for your first day of work?"
"Yeah! I'm a little nervous just because it's a new setting and a whole new menu. I'm really excited to start working again. I loved the little cafe I worked at back home." I start to explain while sitting across Emma at the kitchen table. "I just don't know what to expect from the customers you know? Back home we had a lot more regulars that pretty much became our friends so I'm used to this friendly environment."
"Sa I'm sure you'll do great! I go there quite often! The crowd is definitely college students or people in their mid to late twenties. They totally have your average regulars who will hang around, but early in the morning, it does get pretty hectic. It is such a hot spot for commuters at our school. Their iced chai latte is to die for!" Emma explains to me while biting into her toast.
"I'm a sucker for iced chai lattes, so I'm going to have to try that out today," I respond as I make my way over to the couch to watch some more Netflix before I need to head out. Once Emma is done with her breakfast she makes her way over to me to watch Criminal Minds.
Before you know it, it's time for me to head out. I say goodbye to Emma telling her to wish me good luck because I know that I'm going to need it. After shutting the door I let out a big puff and make my way to the car.
The drive to Roasters went by pretty quickly. Emma was smart enough to have our apartment close to school because I have heard how bad traffic can be and the last thing I need is to run late and have no chance of being on time.
As I pull into the parking spot I take out my phone to text Weston to let him know that I am here. Weston is the manager that is on today. What's cool about Roasters is that the owners know they have a younger crowd coming in, so their employees are all around my age. Weston is only a year older than me so it's cool to know that my manger will be someone I can talk to.
"Hi, Vanessa! It's great to finally meet you!" Weston greets me as I step out of my car.
"Same to you Weston! I'm excited to start up!" I respond as we walk towards the cafe.
The inside of the cafe fits perfectly with what you would expect a coffee shop to look like for a younger audience. The interior walls were all wood with the counter being a white/gray wood color. The floors were white and there was a ton of windows to let natural light in. The chairs they had looked very comfortable and there were plenty of seats inside. The cafe wasn't too big but still felt pretty roomy. I totally could see myself doing homework here.
"Pretty cool huh?" Weston chirps in after seeing me looking around in awe.
"Yes! This is beautiful! It's so modern and sleek. I might be here on days when I'm not working just to get homework done." I respond.
Weston laughs and then hands me a black apron with the story logo and my name embroidered on it. I start training and because I worked at a coffee shop before, knowing how to make drinks wasn't that hard. There were very few I didn't know how to make or they had a few differences in how they made their drinks that made it special and like their secret recipe. Weston was quite impressed with me and even let me start doing orders on my own.
A few hours went by and Weston started introducing me to regulars who literally come in every day. They are such nice people and immediately struck up conversations with me. I never thought in a busy city like Los Angeles, customers would actually be more like friends to the workers.
The inside was still pretty busy, but it was more people who have already ordered and were doing work than people coming in and buying. Weston told me that our rush has died down and it will be slower for the rest of my shift. This left plenty of time for Weston and I to talk and get to know each other. I learned Weston prefers to be called Wes, he grew up in Long Beach, CA, and made the move to live in LA when he was 18. He found himself coming to LA so much that it made sense for him to move. He lives with his girlfriend, Lesley, and they've been together since they were 16. Talk about high school sweethearts. I explain to him how I literally just moved to LA and moved in with my childhood best friend. I start telling him stories about Emma and I as kids and how we always found a way to stay in touch even after she moved. I tried to hide some of my past from Wes just because I wasn't fully ready to tell him everything. Although we have already clicked, I needed to get to know him more.
Wes told me because it was quite dead if I just cleaned up and stocked up I could go home early because there wasn't too much I needed to do. I start wiping down the counters where we out new drinks and stocking up the fridge with milk and whipped cream. I head over to where our napkins, straws, and creamers were kept to fill up. As I'm filling up the container that holds straws a voice interrupts.
"Excuse me, may I grab a straw please?" I hear a British accent speak.
"Oh, I'm sorry! Here you go!" I say as I turn to hand him a straw and I am greeted with the greenest eyes I have ever seen. This man was breathtaking. He had long hair that suited him and would be so hard for other men to pull off. His hair had some curls to it. He wore a simple gray t-shirt with black skinny jeans. He appeared pretty young, definitely not over the age of 25.
"Thanks love," the mysterious man says smiling as he grabs the straw and turns away to walk back to his table.
I snap myself back into reality and finish stocking up everything while my mind is still on the green-eyed beauty. I say goodbye to Wes and tell him that I will see him at 5 tomorrow morning. As I'm heading out I can just feel a pair of eyes on me that I hoped is the man with the green eyes, but I was too scared to turn and make eye contact for myself. I make my way to the car and drive back home.
