Chapter 3: Love Potion (Harry's perspective)
Harry and Hermione arrived to potions a few minutes late, Peeves having held them up in the entrance hall with one of his pranks. Harry wasn't too concerned though, Slughorn seemed to have taken a liking to both him and Hermione.
"Oh Harry, wonderful for you to join us. You too, Hermione. Have a seat, I was just telling the rest of the class about what we'll be learning this year," Slughorn said with a hint of a smile on his face. Harry took a seat near the front of the room next to Ron while Hermione sat at the table next to theirs. Harry heard whispered remarks from a few of the Slytherins, mostly Malfoy, upset that he was late and had recieved no repercussions. It was nice to be the one who was favored for once, if Snape were here he would have taken at least 50 points from Gryffindor already.
"Now today we'll be brewing something very difficult, but very special. Can anyone tell me what Amortentia is?"
Hermione's hand shot up as she answered the question, not waiting to be called on. "Amortentia is the most powerful love potion in the magical world. It doesn't actually cause love of course, it actually just causes a strong obsession with the other person. If the potion is brewed correctly, it should smell like the thing or things that you are most attracted to."
"Very good Ms. Granger, 10 points to Gryffindor. Now open your books to page 126 and begin your potions," Slughorn said. The classroom burst into chatter as everyone pulled out their books and cauldrons, and began collecting the necessary ingredients.
"Professor, I don't have a book yet," Harry said as he made his way over to Slughorn who was now sitting at his desk, sifting through papers.
"Grab one from the cupboard over there," Slughorn replied, pointing towards the back wall. Harry nodded even though Slughorn was paying no attention to him, and he walked to the back of the room where the books were. He pulled out the last copy of Advanced Potion Making and made his way back to his cauldron. As he opened the book though, he noticed that on the inside cover were the words 𝔓𝔯𝔬𝔭𝔢𝔯𝔱𝔶 𝔬𝔣 𝔱𝔥𝔢 ℌ𝔞𝔩𝔣-𝔅𝔩𝔬𝔬𝔡 𝔓𝔯𝔦𝔫𝔠𝔢.
"You have fifty minutes left," Slughorn yelled out across the classroom.
Harry didn't pay much attention to the strange words in his book and instead turned to the correct page, making a mental note to do some research later. Harry quickly scanned his eyes across the ingredients list and immediately saw that in the same handwriting as before, there were notes in the margins that differed from what the book said. Harry quickly looked around to see what everyone else was doing, and he quickly saw that he was falling behind. Finally Harry decided that if he wanted to pass this class, he had to do something different. So, he followed the Prince's instructions instead.
"Harry, what are you doing?" Hermione asked as she saw Harry deviating from the original instructions.
"You know I will not pass this class this year, there is so much that is happening. Maybe these instructions are shortcuts for the potion. I need all the help I can get, and if I ever what to be an auror I need to pass," whispered Harry through gritted teeth. Harry knew that this was a really bad excuse, but his curiosity had gotten the best of him and he couldn't admit that to Hermione.
"Cheating isn't the way to do it," she huffed back. Harry wasn't really listening though, all of his concentration was on the Prince's book. Many of the original instructions were left untouched, but the changed parts differed drastically. Harry could only hope that he was not building a bomb, and instead just finding a better way to make the potion.
Just as Slughorn called time, Harry threw the last few of his ingredients into the cauldron and stirred three times clockwise. And just as the book had said, the potion gave off a mother-of-pearl sheen.
